About the Author
DELIA PARR is the author of nine historical novels and the winner of several awards, including the Laurel Wreath Award for Historical Romance and the Aspen Gold Award for Best Inspirational Book. The mother of three grown children, she is a full-time high school teacher who spends her summer vacations writing and kayaking. She lives in Collingswood, New Jersey.

Just too slow

I like a clean book, I like historical, I don't require a hot romance. Yes...I like reading about faith in action. But come 'on--there has got to be some degree of excitement, adventure. The book had several possibilities, but the author failed to infuse the level of emotion necessary to make the read enjoyable. I was bored and the read was forced after about the first one third.

An unexpected delight

I hesitated to get this book, as I don't normally read historical fiction. After a moment or two of indecision, I finally downloaded it, and I was pleased as punch when I read it.

Emma is a woman of faith who runs her own boardinghouse. She lives there with her widowed mother-in-law, a reverend, a runaway widow, and two helpers (one of them is more clumsy than I am). Through her trials and tribulations, she always found the time to pray and seek God's will.

This was a good read, and I can't understand the negative reviews. I know that there were some issues with a reviewer who pointed out that Emma was carrying bags, but they weren't invented during the time period, and also about the slow pace of the book; however, the book was very enjoyable despite the issues other reviewers pointed out. Yes, it was a slow pace, but I did enjoy reading this book. It was relaxing to me, and I wasn't all hyped up or sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the next twist in the story.

If you want something to read that is a change of pace, and will help you to just relax, then I suggest you get this book. Don't be put off by the negative reviewers; everything doesn't have to be full of twists and turns or a nail-bitter for an enjoyable read.

A Hearth in Candlewood is book three in the Candlewood series by Della Parr.

Candlewood is a small town in New York that handles tourists. Emma Garrett has a small bed and breakfast called Hill House Inn. She had purchased it and refurnished it making it into a wonderful place. However, she was a pushover for people in need so had several people living there who were not paying guests. In spite of this, she makes a tolerable living. If things change, she might do better.
When Widow Leonard shows up at Hill House Inn, things begin to change. Widow Leonard was, according to her husband’s will, live between the houses of her two boys. However, the boys are feuding over a piece of land between their properties which they jointly own and it makes it difficult for their mother. So, she moves out! She shows up at Hill House Inn for a place to stay; but fully intends to pay her own way with no help from her sons. Even though Emma gives her a room to help her out, it places Emma in the middle of the feud. Has Emma done the right thing?
With the addition of Widow Leonard, it seems that major changes are in the air all of a sudden. What will Emma do? What will happen in Hill House Inn?

This is a short read, but a GREAT read, as everything Mrs. Tiwana mentions is true on these few pages. Pick-up a copy today, and remember to smile, you never know whose life you are touching by doing that one simple thing in life.

About the Author
Mary Matsuda Gruenewald lives in Seattle, Washington. She will be 80 years old in 2005 when this book is published. This is her first book and of considerable significance for her generation and as a Nissei. She will be breaking the silence of telling her story, in-depth, about her years imprisoned for being Japanese in America. After being released from her last Japanese-American internment camp, Gruenewald became a registered nurse, and worked as an R.N. for more than a quarter of a century. She established the Consulting Nurse Service within the Group Health Cooperative in 1971, which has become a national model for numerous health care providers. In 2002 she was a medical delegate representing seniors on behalf of Medicare Plus Choice. At that meeting she was selected along with ten other delegates to advise President George W. Bush on health care issues. Her articles regarding her internment during WW II have appeared in newspapers and she has presented commentaries for NPR KPLU. She speaks to many schools and community groups about her internment. Gruenewald received an Asian American Living Pioneer Award in 2003 honoring her contributions.

Disturbing but inspirational. A great read!

There are many books about the internment camp experience, but none have the emotional power and narrative drive of Mary Matsuda Gruenwald's book "Looking Like the Enemy." By sharing with us her personal story about her time in the camps, by laying bare her feelings of anger and shame in this heart-wrenching coming-of-age story, Mary Matsuda shows us what it is like to be torn from your community and friends for no good reason. Reading her book, I cannot help but think of the similar experiences now faced by Muslims in our country. The fact that we were wrong to imprison the Japanese-American populationis intellectually undeniable. Mary Matsuda shows us that same truth, but from the heart. And she show us how, with courage, it is possible to overcome the worst of experiences and still maintain ones dignity. This should be required reading for all of us and our children. The book lays bare a shameful chapter in our country's history that we must never be allowed to forget. Best of all, it's a great read.

A Must Read

Looking Like the Enemy is a not-to-be forgotten book. I savored every word and image as I tried to imagine how I would feel in Mary's Matsuda's shoes as a teenager imprisoned by her own government simply because of her parent's ancestry.

Mary's writing is so vivid and she makes the internment come alive as she shares her thoughts and feelings at being plunged into this terrible situation. While her anger and fear are so real, so also is the hope that her mother in particular, instills in the family.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand our history and also racial discrimination. In our world today when many are punishing those who "look like the enemy", may this book serve as a lesson to us all.

Strongly recommended to all Americans

Even if one is aware of the internment of the American Japanese, I doubt that most people can form any real idea of what it was like without reading a personal chronicle like this. It is difficult to express how painful it is to read, and I already knew the basic story. Sure, now we know that it didn't turn into a second Holocaust, but the people in the camps didn't have that comforting foreknowledge. One needs to be reminded that although the intense portions of a tragedy may be long over with, the ramifications for the people who suffered through it can last all their lives, even for those who didn't lose everything that they had owned before the catastrophe.

Jeanne Wakatusi Houston also wrote a classic memoir: Farewell to Manzanar: A True Story of Japanese American Experience During and After the World War II Internment, and it is well worth reading both of the books for the similarities and differences between the two experiences. Houston was perhaps 8 or 10 years younger than Mary Matsuda, and her family dynamics were quite different, so they really complement one another. Being older, Mary Matsuda had to confront personally and directly issues that Jeanne Wakatusi Houston didn't, although of course her family members did. JWH tells us more about her life after the camps; MMG ends her books in 1945, with only an afterword summarizing the later lives of the Matsudas.

I found the book very vivid. I could easily imagine how I would feel having to destroy so much family history, even being afraid to keep a set of dolls lest it add fuel to the anti-Japanese fervor. And I feel that I have some inkling of what it was like to live for years under constant strain, not knowing what would come next, or if it would ever end. I was close to crying at points, which is unusual for me. The Matsudas lived on Vashon Island in the Puget Sound, which should make the book all the more interesting to fans of Guterson's Snow Falling on Cedars: A Novel.

The book includes a bibliography, a glossary and numerous black-and-white photographs of the Matsudas and the camps.

`The Critical Period' by John Fiske covers the early years of the post-Revolutionary United States of America. While the United States had secured a hard-fought independence and concluded the hostilities of the Revolutionary War, the next five years featured a series of setbacks until the states met to draw up a serviceable constitution. This book covers the story, including detailed coverage of both bookend events: The Treaty of Paris and the Ratification of the American Constitution.

This book was mentioned as a resource in Chapter Seven of History of the United States by Charles A. Beard and Mary Ritter Beard. Fiske's coverage of the five years between the book-end events make this book stand out. Edmund Randolph listed the problems of the era in his opening speech to the Constitutional Congress, `The federal government has no constitutional power to check a quarrel between separate states; nor to suppress a rebellion in any one of them; nor to establish a productive impost; nor to counteract the commercial regulations of other nations; nor to defend itself against the encroachments of the states.' Fiske describes the incidents behind those problems in detail, making the reader understand the link between the events of the critical period and various words of the Constitution.

You may have heard of some of these incidents, such as Shays Rebellion, the Newburgh Conspiracy, the Jay-Gardoqui Treaty with Spain, and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787- which was not an incident but one of the highlights of the era. If you don't quite remember these incidents, Fiske reminds you about them, with good explanations of the issues. He also describes other incidents of the era that are lesser-known: the Know-Ye Measures of Rogue's Island, the Rutgers versus Waddington trial over the Trespass Law in New York, and a pair of military conspiracies that scared the collective wits of the country, especially when they occurred around the same time as the better-known Newburgh Conspiracy and the Order of Cincinnati drama of 1783.

Did you know that Patrick Henry - `Give me liberty or give me death! - advocated the formation of a Southern Confederacy with Virginia joining the Carolinas, Georgia, and the western lands of Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Yazoo lands west of Georgia? The western territories were upset that the Jay-Gardoqui Treaty of 1786 allowed the Mississippi River to be closed to American traffic for twenty years. Because New Englanders supported this treaty, Henry stated that the north was an unreliable custodian of liberty in the frontier. In the end, the treaty was not approved. Henry also opposed the Constitution inked at Philadelphia for other reasons.

Fiske also makes a unique argument that many of the American delegates at Philadelphia were trying to shoehorn a misunderstood version of the British government into republican principles. This interesting argument states that the Glorious Revolution of 1688 made the Parliament the national body with power in England, but practically, these changes were not realized for 136 years. Such an argument is not made much today, maybe because it is a bit confusing to Americans unfamiliar with the history of the British government.

This book is free on Kindle, so the price is right. I downloaded an e-book for free on Project Gutenberg, so my review is based on that version of the book. The book was written in 1888 but the prose was not too stilted and the story was not too outdated. Some of Fiske's remarks about Indians may be considered socially incorrect today, but they are a small part of the book. His opinion was not an uncommon viewpoint from the times.

This book gave a wonderful account of the Critical Period. I used the book in conjunction with A Brilliant Solution: Inventing the American Constitution by Carol Berkin, a modern look at the American Constitution. I'd recommend this book by Fiske to anyone looking to understand the events that sparked the Constitutional Convention.

Following the traditional structure, Fiske emphasizes military and governmental events. However, he does it in more detail than usual; his examples are often interesting and little-known, and his language is lively. One of the best.

This is an excellent book and great follow up to Fiske's "The American Revolution". I loved reading those two volumes as well as this one...Fiske was an excellent historian and author and the proof is evident in these pages.

About the Author
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in 1807 in Portland, Maine, and he became a professor of modern languages at Harvard. His most famous narrative poems include The Song of Hiawatha, Paul Reveres Ride, "The Village Blacksmith," "The Wreck of the Hesperus." From his friend Nathaniel Hawthorne, Longfellow got a brief outline of a story from which he composed one of his most favorite poems, 'Evangeline'. The original story had Evangeline wandering about New England in search of her bridegroom. One of the first poets to take the landscape and stories of North America as his subjects, Longfellow became immensely popular all over the world, and he was the first American commemorated in the Poets Corner of Westminster Abbey. He was given honorary degrees at the great universities of Oxford and Cambridge, invited to Windsor by Queen Victoria, and called by request upon the Prince of Wales. He was also chosen a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and of the Spanish Academy. He died on March 24, 1882.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is known as one of America's best known and best loved poets of all time. The Complete Poetical Works, covers I believe, everything ever writteb by this exquisite poet.

You will find your most treasured and well-loved favorites, as well as the most obscure findings in this brilliant collection. This is a "must-have" for all fans of Longfellow and his works.

It'(mostly)lyric style poetry with a rhyming rhythm that is sure to bring memories back to long-time followers of Longfellow and new poetry lovers as well. He writes with an easy to understand method and obvious themes, these poems come back to me just as easy as some of my favorite mother goose stories, childhood songs, and rhymes.

I do want to point out that I bought this tome on Kindle, and the print in this collection of poems shows up perfectly formatted and just the right size (not small or tiny) without any adjustment to the font. There are no complaints regarding how these works show up on the kindle whatsoever, so if you are a kindle owner and a poetry owner, this is a solid buy at just .99. Actually, it's an amazing value.

I can honestly, without reserve, recommend this book to all who love Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, American Poetry and Poets.

Comprehensive, ordered, and beautiful

This book is part of the Cambridge series of poets and is certainly well worth the money. Longfellow's poems are nicely grouped, with introductory comments to set the background of each. There are also notes back near the index that further explain some of the passages. Longfellow was an extremely successful poet in his lifetime, but his popularity fell in the century following his death in 1882; considering the 20th century's penchant for the abstruse, there is both humor and truth in Canadian novelist Robertson Davies' wry remark, that Longfellow's dimming popularity is owing to his being wholly comprehensible. Many of Longfellow's poems are familiar for the stories they tell (e.g. The Courtship of Miles Standish, Evangeline, Paul Revere's Ride, Hiawatha), but there are many little known specimens which are moving in their own right. This is a wonderful volume of poetry, highly readable, and worth the effort to obtain for yourself.

These negative behaviors don’t happen once in a while, they happen almost continuously in their intimate relationships and most often, and especially with their Caretaker family member.

Here, Margalis Fjelstad describes how people get into a Caretaker role with a Borderline or Narcissist, and how they can get out. Caretakers give up their sense of self to become who and what the Borderline or Narcissist needs them to be. This compromises the Caretaker’s self-esteem, distorts their thinking processes, and locks them into a Victim-Persecutor-Rescuer pattern with the Borderline or Narcissist. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Fjelstad´s book and I found it informative, exciting, and above all very well written. Fjelstad is truly honest and frank about the fact that the borderline and narcissist are mentally ill and unwilling to change. She is open about the fact that caretakers too get something from the situation and that it is up to them to break the cycle of caretaking since the BP or NP is not going to change their ways. Fjelstad's advice is well thought out and practical which makes them easier to follow and she provides the reader with specific ideas and examples to how the caretaker can make the changes needed to rid themselves of the power that the BP or NP has over them. . . . [T]he book is excellent material for anyone that is living with or has any involvement with a BP or a NP, close or distant, since the book fosters understanding of the disorders and the need of the caretaker. Margalis Fjelstad, PhD, LMFT, has a private psychotherapy practice in Ft. This book was like reading about several people in my life AND my interactions with them. It further solidified my dawning awareness that these people will not change (not easily and maybe not at all and maybe never). It validated many of my feelings and experiences related to dealing with the BPD & NPD. It gave me HOPE that my life can improve...BUT it will be up to me to make it happen for myself. Waiting for them to care, be kind, share, reciprocate, show empathy, be helpful, be responsible, be less crazy/angry/needy/manipulative is a waste of my time and my life. The author gives many suggestions for what I can do to make my situation better - very helpful as my boundaries have been bludgeoned by the BPD and NPD people for pretty much all of my life. Duh, hello. Why did I not realize all of this on my own many years before? My own thinking was not as clear as it would have been if I had not been subjected all my life to the BPD/NPD authority figures & significant others. The author lays out some very helpful guidelines about my responsibilities vs my caretaking behaviors. It feels like permission to just be a responsible, nice, caring person rather than take on the job of making all these crazy people happy!! Woohoo! I have a long way to go, but the path is a lot more clear after reading this book.

Excellent, insightful, and to the point

This book offers clear insights without delving into the author's past or too many case studies. It provides understanding of the BP/NP personalities as well as the Caretaker's, and why we are inclined to get hooked into these toxic relationships. It gives clear and hopeful advice to Caretakers on how to extricate themselves from a borderline/narcissist, and gives a clear picture of the importance of doing so. This is one of the most USEFUL self-help guides I have read in a long time! I originally borrowed it from a local library but found it so helpful I wanted to own my own copy.
(As for the one star review, the grammatical mistake is only in the web write-up and is corrected on the book flap. The grammar and writing is strong throughout without being too pedantic or technical. A reminder that one should actually read a book before reviewing it.)

This is worth 10 Stars!

Having been raised in a family with a borderline/narcissist mother, and an enabling father, I have been in denial most of my life about how dysfunctional our life was. This book has forced my eyes open in a way that 7 years with my therapist could not do. Granted, as a recovering Caretaker, I was ready to hear the whole truth about how dysfunctional I had become and how much work is ahead of me to fix myself and not the other people in my life, but this book got into every nook and cranny of dysfunction and called it what it was. I am shocked at all the connections I never made and dismayed at how much I still need to change but I am going to do the hard work ahead. Dysfunction has affected at least 4 generations, I want the buck to stop with me so my kids have a better role model.
