Excellent choice for review of problems in written English

This text has aided me in setting up a variety of exercises for my own high school students. Although it is geared for college students, many of the concepts can be helpful on the high school level as well. The author's organization gave me a way to approach some core problems most English teachers meet. I shortened a few sections that met my special needs, taught them with my own examples, then had students create their own sentences. I checked their work for appropriateness, then used them for group work. Involvement made the students pay attention; and seeing their own sentences on the practice sheets and quizzes encouraged the young people to create better sentences. I have advised several of my former students in college to look for the book as an aid when they write about having writing problems that deal with usage and grammar on college papers. Also, I've shared the text with many of my teacher friends as an excellent review source. It's one of my most used reference books. I am forever grateful to finding this text in a college bookstore that I roamed through checking what was being used by college English classes back in the 80's. So happy to see it is still in print.

An incubative America struggling to live up to its values

Silver provides an excellently written, thoroughly documented look at the first advocates of the equality for the (nominally) gentler sex. Enshrined in the American Declaration of Independence and Constitution were rights unrecognized until clarified by the national mindset.

Today's Americans of all races and genders owe their attention to the experiences of previous generations, so that those life lesson do not dissipate with apathy. "Early Whispers" does an admirable job of promoting this virtue.

Detective Superintedent Roy Grace is tired, exhausted as is his soon to be wife, Chole. They have a new seven week old son, Noah. As all parents know, the first year in a child's life is one of little sleep for the parents. Grace is worried that this lack of sleep will interfere with his job. One of his colleagues keeps interjecting his thoughts about how love leaves after a child enters the picture. What worries the new father has, as if he does't have enough troubles with a new murder to solve.

The victim, Aileen McWhirter, 92, is tortured to obtain the details of the combination of her safe as well as her bank account details. The thieves steal more than antiques, it turns out a valuables Patek Phillipe watch, a family heirloom has gone missing. Gavin Daly, Aileen's brother, is a very rich man who made his money via antiques. His son, Lucas it seems is a drug addict, and he and his father do not get on well. However, Daly and his son are determined to get the watch back, never mind the rest of the antiques. And,they work against the police which sets Grace's nerves on edge.

The mystery of the watch is a terrific plot, and the writing is solid and entertaining. There are several interesting twists and turns. And, of course, Sandy, the former lost wife, turns up while seeing a therapist in Germany. This part of the series has become so dull that I have come to dislike Sandy. She is not interesting nor a part of he plot that I want.

One of Grace's former prisoners, who hates Grace with a passion, is out on parole, and he is set to enact revenge. This part of the storyline is a litte off base, but brings some interest. Grace's travel to New York City is a part of the book that could have been deleted. Like Officer Cobb, I don't understand why Grace feels the need to be there.

One of Grace's colleagues is always eating Red Maltesers, and I finally googled to find out what they are:

'Maltesers are a confectionery product manufactured by Mars, Incorporated. Maltesers consist of a roughly spherical malt honeycomb centre, surrounded by milk chocolate. They are most popular in Denmark, the UK, Australia, Switzerland, Spain, Ireland, Canada, France, Hong Kong, and Portugal. It's a fair cop...

Right, time for a startling confession. I have to date only read one Peter James book- shame on me. So when I was approached to read and review Dead Man's Time I was looking forward to the opportunity of re-entering D.I. Roy Grace's world albeit with a seven book hiatus. In a way this has worked in my favour as I cannot have been said to be influenced by the other books, nor can this give me cause to compare this one to its predecessors in terms of style and character development, so it was really quite nice to read this in a vacuum unhindered, as I sometimes am, by the weight of those books in a series that have gone before!

I think was an interesting authorial experiment on the behalf of James as the action in the book pivots between the UK, Spain and America to accommodate the needs of the plot. The book opens in 1920`s New York, as a young boy's mother is killed and his father is spirited away by some ne'er-do-wells, immediately piquing my interest, but we are quickly settled back into present day Brighton, with Grace investigating a particularly heinous home invasion and the murder of its elderly occupant. It gradually unfolds that these two events either side of the Atlantic are related, and as the dead woman's brother, nonagenarian Gavin Daly- a man with his own shady past- seeks his personal revenge on those responsible, Grace becomes embroiled in a tale of greed and murder that inevitably comes a little too close to his own doorstep. I don't know if it's just a personal foible on my part, but I did feel that as a reader I had the uncomfortable sensation of treading water a little, during certain parts of the UK based part of the book. There seemed to be a quite laborious journey to who was behind the whole robbery and why, and how by some dubious coincidences Grace's nearest and dearest come to be threatened, along with a swift trip to Marbella by Daly's odious son Lucas, and oafish hard man sidekick, to deal with some miscreants and a random diversion to Germany for Grace's ex-partner Sandy to vent at her therapist. But, fear not, the book increases in excitement one hundred fold when Gavin Daly plus odious son Lucas, the ineffable Roy Grace and a couple of his colleagues all hotfoot it to America for the final denouement. I loved this section of the book, bemoaning the fact that it couldn't be longer, and loved the interplay between Grace and his American counterparts, the depiction of New York and its environs, and the brilliant Gavin Daly wreaking his revenge for the sins of the past. Excellent, but a long time in coming and rudely interrupted by Grace's irritating other half, Cleo- despite being showered by police protection after a storm in a teacup incident- making him come home. No. Let him stay a bit longer to hang out with the cool cops!

As the previous paragraph shows I did have issues with some of the supporting cast, but I do like Roy Grace- he's so thoroughly decent and upstanding which proved a nice counterpoint to my personal preference of the more maverick and tortured souls who reside in law enforcement. I like his personal mantra that "he would never stop fighting his corner for the murder victims. He would work around the clock night and day to catch and lock up the perpetrators. And mostly, so far in his career, he had succeeded." A good cop with a prodigious sense of right and wrong, ingrained with a wry humour and a natural empathy to those around him. I found the focus on his tedious home life a little too intrusive and disempowering throughout, but thought his character really came to the fore when involved in the cut and thrust of the investigation, and when interacting with suspects and colleagues.

The other standout character for me was the wily Gavin Daly, a man defined by his father's disappearance in the era of Irish gangs in New York (the history of which was seamlessly woven into the central plot), and his lifelong ambition to find the truth behind his father's disappearance and his final resting place. I thought this back story and the characterisation of Gavin himself gave some real backbone to the overall narrative arc, and his steely determination made him an admirable adversary not only for those who had sinned against him but in his cat and mouse relationship with Grace.

So despite a couple of quibbles, overall I quite enjoyed my return to the world of Peter James with Dead Man's Time. I felt quite at home in the company of Roy Grace- our thoroughly decent detective- and thankfully the American aspects of the book, both in the terms of gang history and the relocation of the action to New York- lifted this from, for me personally, a slightly average read, to a slightly more exciting one. Not bad, not brilliant.

This is right on target for the Roy Grace series. The plot is interesting, we catch up with some of our old friends and the scene shifts from Brighton to Spain to New York. I suppose there are issues if you want to nitpick but I am grading it on how much I enjoyed it. Given it is an entry in a long running series it could have been different. Sometimes such books come across as rote, a repetition of a formula that the author is bored with but obligated to perform under pressure from his publisher. This however stands on its own. It holds the attention and I read it within 24 hours. I deliberately have avoided a plot summary as others here have provided way too much detail. On one negative or rather frustrating note Sandy is still missing and we are tantalised with glimpses into her life. Still no resolution. I recommend this highly if you like your police procedurals but read the earlier ones first.

This is definitely one of Kristen Heitzmann's best!!!

"Sweet Boundless" as a sequel to "The Rose Legacy" is just the way I wanted it to be! I was really sucked into the book badly. I couldn't wait to finish it! I can actually feel the emotion that Carina and Quillan were going through. I wanted to yell at both of them for the dumb things they do. This kind of book is what I love to read. It has romance, emotional conflicts,forgiveness and a reverence to God (Signore). I also love the way Kristen Heitzmann sprinkles Italian words in the dialogue and applies it to the plot as well. I wasn't disappointed at all in this book. If you have read "The Rose Legacy" you'll want to read this book. You won't be disappointed. I can hardly wait for the 3rd one when it is released!

As soon as I read the Rose Legacy, I really anticipated reading the next book in this series; because the last book ended in such a way to where you just had to get your hands on this book to find out what happens between Quillan and Carina. I must tell you I was not disappointed with Sweet Boundless! In fact I thouroughly enjoyed it! I read this book in one day, because its written in a way that compells you to keep reading and reading and reading. I can't wait for the third book in this series! You must read this! You will really enjoy it!
