About the Author
Randall VanderMey (Ph.D. University of Iowa, M.F.A. Iowa Writers¿ Workshop, M.A. University of Pennsylvania) is an associate professor in the Department of English at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. He also has taught composition, literature, and technical writing at Iowa State University, Dordt College, and the University of Iowa. He is a contributing editor and creative consultant for Write Source. VanderMey has received numerous fellowships, grants, and awards for his teaching and poetry. He has published two books of poems, GROWING SOUL: A SONG CYCLE, GOD TALK, and CHARM SCHOOL: FIVE WOMEN OF THE ODYSSEY, as well as a commissioned biography, MERIZON: THE GREAT JOURNEY.

Verne Meyer (Ph.D. University of Minnesota) has spent twenty-five years in the English classroom, first at the high school level and more recently at the college level. He has taught composition and theater at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. Meyer has received several awards recognizing his excellence as both a classroom teacher and a director of dramatic arts. He is considered an authority on writing across the curriculum and workplace writing, and often gives presentations as a featured speaker at educational conferences.

John Van Rys (Ph.D. Dalhousie University, M.A./B.A. University of Western Ontario) has taught composition, business writing, and literature courses to college students for more than fifteen years, primarily at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. In the fall of 2005, Van Rys began teaching in the English Department at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ontario, where he also is pursuing scholarly work in Canadian literature. For over a decade, he has worked on writing-across-the-curriculum theory and practice, on connections between workplace and academic writing, and on strategies for strengthening varied literacies in students (from reading to information to visual literacy). With Write Source Educational Publishing and Cengage Learning, he has coauthored writing handbooks for students from middle school to college. Van Rys also has coauthored an award-winning business-writing handbook for workplace professionals, WRITE FOR BUSINESS, with UpWrite Press.

Patrick Sebranek (M.A. University of Wisconsin, LaCrosse) taught English, speech, and multimedia classes for sixteen years at Union Grove High School in Wisconsin. During that time, he served as the English department chair and worked on several district-wide projects, including a writing-across-the-curriculum program and a K-12 writing sequence. He has studied the works of James Moffett, Ken Macrorie, Linda Reif, Nancie Atwell, and many other contemporary educators dealing with writing and learning. Sebranek is an author and editorial director for the Write Source Educational Publishing House and works closely with teachers and educators on all new and revised handbooks and sourcebooks.

Hayder's new thriller, book six in her series featuring Det. Insp. Jack Caffery, finds the London homicide cop haunted by the events of a previous case. Perhaps because of this, the novel focuses on a second protagonist, AJ LeGrande the newly minted head nursing coordinator at a high-security psychiatric hospital in Bristol, who is beginning to suspect that the facility's patients have been tormented and brutalized by a former patient. Both Caffery and LeGrande are rich, conflicted characters, and as the plot shifts from one to the other, the narration provided by Steven Crossley, though remaining coolly objective, changes in suitably subtle ways. His description of AJ's workspace has a moody, ominous quality, darkened by the presence of a rumored ghost, and patients such as a chillingly addled inmate called Monster Mother. Le Grande's home life is described with a brighter tone; he lives in a cottage with a beloved dog and a half-Jamaican aunt who cares for him. On the other hand, Crossley uses consistent, darkly terse narration for Caffery's sections of the book, lightened only slightly by the interplay with his assistant, Flea Marley. Eventually, LeGrande convinces Caffery to become fully engaged in the grim criminal doings at the hospital. A chilling new addition to the Jack Caffery series

Something evil stalks the halls of Beechway psychiatric hospital - or so the patients and some of the staff believe. They call it the Maude and say that it's the spirit of a woman who once worked in the hospital years ago. When a patient dies unexpectedly, rumors of the Maude begin circulating once again. For AJ LeGrande, it begins as an inconvenience and a difficulty in keeping the wards staffed on overnight shifts. It soon becomes something worse, though, when AJ starts to suspect that there might be some truth in the rumors. But AJ doesn't believe the Maude is anything supernatural. In fact, he believes the Maude could actually be one of Beechway's recently released patients. AJ approaches Jack Caffery in hopes the detective might be able to begin a quiet inquiry. It would be bad for Beechway and its staff if it was discovered they'd released someone who is a danger to society. For Caffery, the case begins as a nuisance but quickly intrigues him. And it's an opportunity to take his mind off the other issues that have been plaguing him of late.

This latest from Hayder is another installment in her long running Jack Caffery series It's just as dark and somewhat gruesome as the others, so do be prepared. It's also not one I'd recommend using as a starting point with the series, though I will say that it's entirely possible. Hayder is a master plotter in my humble opinion. She always seems to be two steps ahead, something the reader will only realize in continuing further into the series.

Poppet can essentially stand on its own but the book picks up in the aftermath of the previous installments so parts of the plot do rely on events that have taken place in past titles. And considering I'm such a huge fan of Hayder's work and this series in particular, I always suggest that anyone interested start at the beginning.

Poppet starts slow and quickly intensifies, building to an almost frantic pace. Hayder is a guaranteed keep you up all night read any time and Poppet is certainly no exception, so lock your doors and settle in. You're in for a fantastic and creepy ride!

Enthralling read

Mo Hayder is an author who delves deep into the darker recesses of the human psyche, and how much darker are the psyches of patients in a mental hospital, some of them there because they have committed horrendous crimes?

AJ, the head psychiatric nurse doesn't want to know why the patients are here, he doesn't want to know what crimes they may have committed to get incarcerated at Beechway, he treats them all with dignity and respect, no matter what they may have done in the past. When the patients start worrying about being haunted by something called 'The Maude', AJ wants to get to the bottom of things, but things go from bad to worse, with deaths and disfigurements of patients. Is there really something otherworldly that is responsible for the deaths or is the answer somewhere closer to home?

This is the sixth Jack Caffrey book, but don't worry if you haven't read any of the others, this works well as a stand-alone novel and I would say that AJ was our main protagonist here, with a few cameo roles from Jack.

The plot twists and turns like any good mystery should and leaves you guessing right till the end. It's been a long time since I've read a mystery where I hadn't guessed the twist a mile away, here I didn't and I was so pleased to be surprised!

AJ was a wonderful, sympathetic character, trying his best to care for his charges in the face of budget cuts, lack of staff who refused to cover the night shift and an old building that is crumbling around them. I adored AJ's Aunt Patience, who always made him a big breakfast whenever he got home, no matter what time of day it happened to be.

I loved the book, but it took a while to get into the flow of it because it was written in the present tense. That seemed a rather strange choice to write a novel in and I was conscious of the tense most of the way through the novel, whereas with most books in the past tense, you don't seem so aware of it. Or maybe that's just me.

Highly recommended for any fans of dark, psychological thrillers.

This really will work!

I have done hypnotic regression with a certified Life Between Life Therapist twice. It was expensive but worth it. It was a life changing experience. I read through the hypnotic suggestions scripts in this book and found that they work even just reading the script with the intention of experiencing self hypnosis. I would not have recognized the authenticity of the experience however, had I not had previous experience with past life regression. This is not like watching a movie of your past life, you get impressions and pictures in your mind in the same way you read a book and imagine from the worded descriptions -what the author is trying to communicate. This would allow you to collect memories of many past lives and with time perhaps improve your ability to achieve clearer sharper identification of what you are experiencing.

It seemed like a rather cumbersome task

I had intentions to do this regression on myself, but due to the logistics I never got around to it. The instructions are to record yourself reading the script (being the facilitator). Go into the regression while recording yourself (being the client) and at the same time, be able to stop the facilitator's voice when necessary so the client has plenty of time to reveal what is being seen. It seemed like a rather cumbersome task, so I never completed it. However, due to this book and "My Past Lives and Life Plan" by the same author definitely inspired me. I am currently taking classes to become NPL certified. Thanks Dr. Schwimmer!

About the Author

Hot Times at the Carrington

When Jason Carrington, the owner of the Carrington Resort saw the sultry Celise Markam checking into his hotel, he knew he would have her in his bed by the end of the night. Celise had no intentions of beginning a relationship with Jason or any other man. She was in Monterey to prove to her family that she could take care of herself without their interference. She went to Monterey with the goal of opening her own restaurant, much to the chagrin of her father, who had other plans for her. The magnetic sparks between Jason and Celise start at the check- in counter and continue throughout the entire book in A.C.Arthur's highly erotic novel, Wanting You.

Wanting You is not for the faint, timid or sexually repressed. The pages are filled with steamy sexual escapades of Jason and Celise. While the majority of the pages are devoted to the sexual escapades of Jason and Celise, there is a mystery component. Jason received several offers from potential buyers for the hotel, but he is not selling, even in the midst of destructive antics that compromises his integrity and business reputation. Wanting You is an enjoyable, albeit very explicit read. It is one I would recommend to those who like erotica and romance.

Looking for a hot read? You've Found It

Having previously read several of AC Arthur's novels, I expected the mystery element that was in Wanting You. That element added a nice backdrop to what was an erotic romance extraordinare. The desire and passion that Jason and Celise had for one another jumped off the page in this VERY erotic and explicit love story. The main characters didn't waste any time hiting the sheets, but the love aspect of their relationship did develop over the course of the book. I won't ruin the plot for you, but Celise did have some emotional scars that Jason more than helped to heal. I would highly recommend this book, but agree with the previous reviewer that it's definitely NOT for the sexually repressed.

This is a great book you will not be disappointed. This book is HOT HOT HOT.
Celise is the youngest and the only girl in her family. She has a loving family a father who don't want his baby girl to grow up which cause some problem for them but in the end all is well can't give away to much. Jason is young and the owner of a hotel who he and his friend turn the hotel around but there is always someone who is out to try and still your joy but in the end all is well with Jason. Now Jason and Celise together is great is show the trust they have for each other and the support that they both give and as I said the this book is HOT the LOVE SCENE all I can say is LAWD HAVE MERCY......................Buy the book you will not be disappointed.

About the Author

I read this book in two days because it held my attention so well -- main problem was that I kept

The story involves an Amish community in the Lancaster, PA, area, in particularly, a young woman named Katie, who is engaged to be married but having trouble with the engagement and with being Amish. One of the primary problems she encounters is the rule about music -- only songs from an ancient volume of hymns are permitted. She has a forbidden guitar given to her by her deceased boyfriend and likes to hum songs they made up together, or even songs from the outside "English" world. Her attempts to conform are increasingly stressful to her, which puzzles her and her fellow Amish. Her family and community dosn't know what to do with her (you can guess from the title where this problem is headed).

The book ends with the situation set up for the next book in this three-volume series -- you almost wonder why they didn't combine these into a single book.

I enjoyed the imaginary trip into the world of the Amish. In my research, I learned that the Amish are really a collection of basically Mennonite churches with stricter rules than the rest of the Mennonites: they follow the traditions strictly, which is why they are called Old Order Amish. They have a greater desire to live apart from people not of their faith community than Mennonites do, but each Amish community has different rules they follow. What happens in this book may be true for this community, but another community might have dealt with it in another way.

If you have no interest in the Amish or reading a book where emotions are tightly controlled and conflict is often concealed, this book probably isn't going to be your cup of tea.

I really enjoyed reading this. There were a few things that don't make a lot of sense plot-wise that made me with the author had been more careful about that. For example, we are told several times that at 22, Katie was considered to be close to the age where she'd never find a husband, and yet the man she is to be married is said to have waited three years to marry her. Her boyfriend drowned some time previously to the story's beginning, and it's clear Katie's fiance has been widowed for a while -- so why has the man been waiting three years for this, particularly since he's clearly in a hurry.

It was also unclear to me why a community so focused on avoiding sinful behavior and which emphasizes community so much does not seem to be bothered by hurtful gossiping. You'd think avoiding that would be among the rules of right behavior! On the other hand, having people gossiping about Katie was a major part of the stress she and her family experience. While this very communal Amish world seemed very cozy in many ways (no-one seems lonely, ever), this complete lack of privacy and pressure to conform helped me understand what would be unpleasant about living this way (aside from lack of modern conveniences like electricity), so unpleasant that some people leave despite the great loss this involves.

Beverly Lewis remains the best Amish writer of all.

Never a dull moment as I read "The Shunning" again. I read it from hard copy when it first came out and just finished it on my Kindall. I love books that stand up to more than one reading. Can't wait to follow Kathrine on her search for her birth mother. So glad Daniel is alive.

Holds Your Attention till the End!

Enjoyed it so much I had to buy the second in the series. The characters are so real that they seem to pop right off the pages. Truly a good story.
