About the Author
Rupert Colley was born one Christmas Day, which means, as a child, he lost out on presents. Nonetheless, looking back on it, he lived a childhood with a "silver spoon in my mouth" - brought up in a rambling manor house in the beautiful Devon countryside. It's been downhill ever since.

He was a librarian for a long time, a noble profession. Then he started a series called History In An Hour, "history for busy people", which he sold to HarperCollins UK.

Rupert now lives in London with his wife, two children and dog (a fluffy cockapoo) and writes historical fiction, mainly 20th century war and misery. Historical fiction with heart.

Superbly written, acutely observed

"The sky was grey as lead. With cold fingers wrapped round their rifles, the twins sheltered behind a burnt-out Soviet tank at the edge of the square, Monika crouched between them. Janos surveyed the scene - the city square a jungle of wreckage: fields of broken glass, torn up paving stones, trailing cables, uprooted tramlines. Among the chaos, the occasional corpse - Russian or Hungarian, their bodies twisted and grotesque. Monika, her face lined with dirt, looked at him. Janos tried to smile and found himself turning away."

So opens 'My Brother the Enemy', a short historical novella set in 1950s Soviet-occupied Hungary. It describes the carnage witnessed by twenty-year-old twin brothers, Janos and Lukacs, and their childhood friend, Monika, as the people of Hungary revolt against the oppression of Soviet rule. How did these young people get here? What atrocities have they witnessed along the way? And what horrors lie in store?

With a narrative which skips deftly back and forth in time, 'My Brother the Enemy' follows Lukacs and Janos - fraternal twins who are physically identical yet poles apart in temperament and personality - as they struggle to find their way in a cruel and unforgiving world which is characterized by violence, poverty, prejudice and injustice. It is also a story of sibling rivalry, seething jealousies, divided loyalties, human frailty and remarkable bravery. This is a superbly written and acutely observed book, with well-rounded characters and convincing dialogue, while the tension and pace are perfectly judged. At around 100 pages, the story is a short one - but for all its brevity, it certainly packs a considerable punch.

'My Brother the Enemy' is Rupert Colley's first fictional outing, having already written ten non-fiction titles for his highly successful 'History In An Hour' series, which is now published by HarperCollins. If this first offering is anything to go by, we can expect some very good things from this author in the future.

Beautifully written.

This is a fantastic first novel from an already established and excellent, non-fiction history author. It is set in 1950's Hungary and succinctly brings the horror of Soviet communism to life.

Knowing little of this period and (rather shamefully) not too much about the Soviet occupation of Hungary I found this bite-size novella the perfect introduction. The characters were fully formed and utterly believable, I cared about them which really engaged me with this historical period. The amount of detailed description and the pace of the unfolding plot were, in my opinion, perfectly balanced.

Perversely, having just stated I enjoyed the 'bite-sized' aspect of this book, I found myself wanting more, wanting the story to continue. I believe, at the end of this tale, the characters were embarking on a brand new adventure and I wanted to go with them and find out what they would do next!

Turbulent historical setting? Check. Vivid descriptions? Check. Realistic and likeable central character? Check. Page-turning excitement? Check. Heart-stopping denouement? Check. Passion, heroism, betrayal? Check, check, and check.

It all adds up: My Brother the Enemy is an excellent work of historical fiction from Rupert Colley (his first written, my second read), this one set in Hungary, beginning a few years post-WWII and moving through the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. The book follows a set of Jewish twins, Janos and Lukacs, who have managed to escape from the Nazis during the war only to be forced afterwards by the communists to relocate to an impoverished little village where they attend a state-run school and watch their once-prosperous father drink himself into oblivion and inebriated rages. A few years later they manage to attend university in Budapest where they take an active role in the revolution.

Janos and Lukacs may be identical twins but their strikingly different personalities and love for the same woman create the book's central tension and keeps those pages turning throughout the novel's vivid historical settings. However, just occasionally, the verisimilitude of those settings cracks when Colley lets slip a Britishism or two. Words and phrases such as "buggered" "sod off" "bloody liar" " the f-ing lot of them" "things were a-changing" (OK, that last one is as American as Bob Dylan), might have been replaced by more generic terms or even possibly Hungarian words with translations somehow neatly tucked nearby.

But this is just an occasional issue. For 99 percent of My Brother the Enemy I nearly believed I was closely observing the conflicted lives of two brothers as they experience the dreary oppression of post-war communist Hungary and the heady thrill of its mid-century revolution.

OK Lightweight Reading

Mildly enjoyable rehash of Broadway gossip. Hadleigh's over-reliance on pages (and pages) of standalone quotes on various topics (thesping, the problem with musicals, etc.) becomes monotonous after awhile.

And one of those quotes is jarringly wrong---on page 288, Hadleigh includes a comment from Madeline Kahn on Nathan Lane's success in "The Producers"---"The Producers" opened in 2001 and Kahn died in 1999. Oops.

This is not HOLLYWOOD BABYLON for Broadway fans

This is a weird little scrapbook promoted as a book.

Hadleigh has two goals.

One is to make sure we know that a great many people working on or around Broadway are gay. Even when he is addressing topics unrelated to sexuality, he must get in that such-and-such was -- Wow! -- gay. But how many people who would buy this book have missed that there is a certain nexus between the gay world and the theatre world?

The other goal is to just dish, and that could make for a fun book. But what Hadleigh wants to dish about often makes him seem like someone who stepped out of a time machine from 1986.

This is a book most excited about the likes of Carol Channing, how bad CATS was, Michael Bennett, and AIDS. Except for the coverage of RENT, this book reads as if it was written two decades ago-plus by a show music fan of a certain age. Mary Martin? Harold Lang? THE BOYS IN THE BAND?

I suppose there is value in getting the nuggets Hadleigh has mined from dishy conversations in piano bars and after cabaret shows down in print, and I am sincere in that.

But readers going from the title will be disappointed. This book is largely a meandering anthropological survey of the Broadway scene from about 1948 to 1988. Special attention is paid to who was gay and which among them died of AIDS. Special attention is paid to performers and shows most of interest to people who were attending to the aforesaid scene during those years, and thus chapters on the controversy over Jonathan Pryce in MISS SAIGON, whether or not Ethel Merman was nice, and magnificently "floppish" shows (a cultish in-joke cherished largely by fans the age of Ken "Not Since Carrie" Mandelbaum).

One chapter follows another for no apparent reason; it's like a transcript of a conversation you could have with an august old gent at Don't Tell Momma's.

If you wouldn't mind having that conversation, pick this one up. Otherwise, be under no impression that this is, in the true sense, a book.

An Incoherent Mess

Disappointing isn't even the word. This is one of the most amateur excuses for a coherent book I've ever seen. Entire chapters are merely pulled quotes from various theatre-folk past and present on random subjects without any apparent point or organization. This isn't writing, it's editing by a publicist. What chapters are supposedly authored by this Boze Hadleigh are written without color or insight and explained as if to a Broadway novice, when--who are we kidding?--the only audience for this kind of thing is the Broadway afficianado. In appropriating the title "Broadway Babylon" Hadleigh doubtless wanted to invoke Kenneth Anger's legendary unmasking of Hollywood's seamier underside. Those expecting similar tales but of the Great White Way, will be doubly disappointed when they take stock of this cheap collection of card catalogue anecdotes and out of context quotations.

About the Author
Geraint Howells is Professor of Law at Manchester University, UK and Barrister Gough Squre Chambers, UK. He has written widely on consumer law issues and his books include: Consumer Product Safety, (Ashgate, 1998); Consumer Protection Law , (2nd Edition, Ashgate, 2005); and EC Consumer Law, (Ashgate, 1997). He frequently acts as consultant for organisations such as the European Commission, DTI and NCC and is a member of the European Consumer Law Group. He is currently editor of the Yearbook of Consumer Law and Markets and Law series for Ashgate publishers. Hans-W. Micklitz is Jean Monnet Chair of Private Law and European Economic Law at the University of Bamberg, Germany and Head of the Institute of European and Consumer Law (VIEW). His work includes: studies of law and sociology in Mainz, Lausanne/Geneva, Giessen and Hamburg; consultancies for OECD in Paris, UNEP Geneva Switzerland/Nairobi Kenya and CI (Consumers International) as well as study visits at the University of Michigan, USA. Miclitz is also Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute Florence, Italy and visiting professor at the University of Oxford. He has been head of the Scientific Committee on Consumer and Nutrition Policy at the Ministry of Consumer Protection, Nutrition and Agriculture since 2003. Dr Thomas Wilhelmsson is Professor of Civil and Commercial Law at the University of Helsinki, Finland. He is Vice-rector of the University and in charge of international affairs. Professor Wilhelmsson has published law books and articles in twelve languages. About the Author
John J. Coyle is director of corporate relations for the Center for Supply Chain Research and professor emeritus of supply chain and information systems at Penn State University. His current research is focused on supply chain transformation and effectively measuring improved supply chain performance at the C level in an organization. A closely related topic that he is pursuing is reverse channels of distribution and their special logistical problems. The author of more than 100 publications in the areas of transportation and logistics, Professor Coyle has presented papers on these topics at professional meetings, including the Council of Logistics Management, the American Marketing Association, the National Academy of Sciences, the Transportation Research Forum, and the Southern Marketing Association. In addition to TRANSPORTATION, he also coauthors the best-seller THE MANAGEMENT OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS. From 1990 to 1996, Dr. Coyle was editor of the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, and he has served on the editorial review board of the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, THE SUPPLY CHAIN REVIEW, and THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS. In 1991, he received the Council of Logistics Management's Distinguished Service Award, which honors individuals who have made a significant contribution to the art and science of logistics. In 2003, The Philadelphia Traffic Club named Dr. Coyle Person of the Year, and in 2004 he received the Eccles Medal from the International Society of Logistics and the Lion's Paw Medal from Penn State. Dr. Coyle serves on the board of three logistics companies. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Penn State and his doctorate from Indiana University, Bloomington, where he was a U.S. Steel Fellow.

John Langley is Professor of Supply Chain Management and Director of Supply Chain Executive Programs at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Langley has been actively involved in supply chain management and business logistics for over 30 years. He is a former president of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and is a past recipient of the Council?s Distinguished Service Award. In 2004, he was honored as one of the profession?s top five logistics executives at the Richmond Events? Logistics & Supply Chain Forum; and in 2007, he was recognized as recipient of the Honorary Distinguished Logistics Professional Award by the American Society of Transportation and Logistics. Dr. Langley received a BS degree in mathematics, an MBA degree in finance, and a PhD degree in logistics management, all from Penn State University. Among his awards and recognitions, he was named ?Outstanding Alumnus? of the Penn State Business Logistics Program. Dr. Langley?s current areas of professional involvement include supply chain strategy, supply chain relationships, and outsourcing of logistics services. Dr. Langley has coauthored a number of books including SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT: A LOGISTICS PERSPECTIVE. Also, he is the lead author of the ANNUAL STUDY ON THIRD PARTY LOGISTICS: VIEWS FROM THE CUSTOMERS. Recent publications have appeared in major academic journals in the fields of logistics and supply chain management such as the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT, and LOGISTICS QUARTERLY. In addition to his university duties, Dr. Langley is a much sought after consultant and advisor to business firms and serves on the board of directors of UTi Worldwide Inc., Forward Air Corporation, and Averitt Express, Inc.

Brian Gibson is a professor of Supply Chain Management and a program coordinator for the Department of Aviation and Supply Chain Management at Auburn University. Previously, he served five years on the faculty of Georgia Southern University as Director of the Southern Center for Logistics and Intermodal Transportation. Dr. Gibson also has ten years? experience as a logistics manager for two major retailers. He is an accomplished faculty member who has received multiple awards for outstanding teaching, research, and outreach, most notably the Auburn University Alumni Association Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award in 2006. Dr. Gibson has coauthored more than 50 refereed and invited articles in the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT REVIEW, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT, and other leading publications. He is actively engaged in executive education, seminar development, and consulting with leading organizations. Dr. Gibson currently serves in leadership roles for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, the Distribution Business Management Association, and the Retail Industry Leaders Association. Dr. Gibson earned a BSBA from Central Michigan University, an MBA from Wayne State University, and a PhD in logistics and transportation from the University of Tennessee.

Robert Novack is an associate professor of supply chain management in the Department of Supply Chain and Information Systems at Penn State University. From 1981 to 1984 he worked in operations management and planning for the Yellow Freight Corporation in Overland Park, Kansas, and from 1984 to 1986 he worked in planning and transportation at Drackett Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Novack's numerous articles have been published in such publications as the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, TRANSPORTATION JOURNAL, and THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT. He also is a coauthor of CREATING LOGISTICS VALUE: THEMES FOR THE FUTURE. Active in the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, he has served as overall program chair for the annual conference, as a track chair, as a session speaker, as well as a member of numerous committees. Dr. Novack holds the CTL designation from AST&L and is a member of WERC. He earned a BS degree and an MBA in logistics from Penn State University and a Ph.D. in logistics from the University of Tennessee.

Edward J. Bardi is principal of Bardi Consulting and professor emeritus of business logistics at the University of Toledo. He also has served as acting dean and associate dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Toledo and has held faculty positions at Iowa State University. Dr. Bardi has published numerous articles dealing with business logistics, transportation management, carrier selection, economic development, and employee household goods movement in various journals, including TRANSPORTATION JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, HANDLING AND SHIPPING, BAYLOR BUSINESS REVIEW, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT, LOGISTICS & TRANSPORTATION REVIEW, and PERSONNEL JOURNAL. He also is co-author of SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT: A LOGISTICS PERSPECTIVE, 8e. A popular seminar leader of domestic and global business logistics management development programs, Dr. Bardi has served as a consultant to numerous business and public agencies in the areas of business logistics, marketing, and economic development. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from Penn State University, majoring in business logistics/transportation economics.

The book has mathematical mistakes and incorrect formulas.
Just went thru the first 7 chapters and found incorrect formulas for exponential smoothing, including several tables.
While the text content is OK, do not rely on the accuracy of the examples, especially if you are not familiar with the topic or concept.

Pretty good book on Logistics

The book does a pretty good job of going through supply chain and logistics. There are a lot of spelling and grammar errors and even some math errors in some of the charts, but it still gets its point across. Pretty expensive though.

About the Author
J. Douglas Faires is a Professor of Mathematics at Youngstown State University. His research interests include analysis, numerical analysis, and mathematics history. Dr. Faires has won many awards, including Outstanding College-University Teacher of Mathematics, Ohio Section of MAA (1996) and Youngstown State University, Distinguished Professor for Teaching (1995-1996).

Richard L. Burden is Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Youngstown State University. His master's degree in mathematics and doctoral degree in mathematics, with a specialization in numerical analysis, were both awarded by Case Western Reserve University. He also earned a masters degree in computer science from the University of Pittsburgh. His mathematical interests include numerical analysis, numerical linear algebra, and mathematical statistics. Dr. Burden has been named a distinguished professor for teaching and service three times at Youngstown State University. He was also named a distinguished chair as the chair of the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. He wrote the Actuarial Examinations in Numerical Analysis from 1990 until 1999.

One of the worst txt books ever

This book is horrible. The whole point of a text book is for someone to be able to learn the material that it presents and this book fails at this. It uses terminology that you can follow, but this same terminology is far more complex than it needs to be. Also, all of the examples in this book skip far to many steps, which makes it incredibly hard to learn from the examples. For instance, this book has an example for the Neville algorithm, but it only describes how to do the first part. To make matters worse, this book is way to expensive for a student.

Horrible book and shame on those that make students use this book.

Everyone must own and read our Constitution. It is under attack daily by people in our government. Having a copy on my Kindle makes it readily available and easily searchable.

A great document to protect us from oppressive government

17 Pages of freedom balanced against government necessity. A great document to guide a government between max freedom and limited government. I am afraid we will lose our REPUBLIC and just become another oppressive socialist/communist/fascist dictatorship. We see government interfering with our lives at almost every step now. What we can eat, drinks, buy, sell, and whether we will get healthcare from a crappy Obamacare Insurance scheme to steal from those that are youg and those that work to spend it on freeloaders who already get free food, free housing, and free cell phones.

everyone needs to keep a copy(mine is in my kindle) of the constitution, and to refresh ourselves with the way the laws of our land ,have prevailed for generations. somehow we, as people, have forgotten the simple laws that our forefathers set forth. it is getting harder everyday to recognize our great country.. to it time to be reminded.
