Very enjoyable read!

I've been visiting Tucker Springs for three days now and I have to say that this last visit was the best one yet.

- Interesting and complex characters. CHECK

- Emotionally driven. CHECK

- Real and believable situations. CHECK

- Sexual chemistry and scorching hot sex scenes. CHECK

Denver caught my attention in the previous book of the series, Second Hand. As I saw it, he didn't do relationships and was happy being a bouncer just as long as it helped him 'get tail'. However, some times when he talked to El in the previous story I got the feeling that there was much more to him than what he portrayed.

Denver Rogers has layers upon layers under all that muscle. I wish I could tell you all about them, but since it was a joy for me to get to known him, I will leave it to you to discover. I will only say that after only reading up to the 11% mark Denver had won my heart. After that I was a goner. That's not to say that Adam did not do the same, but since the synopsis had already given me an idea of what to expect, this came as no surprise to me.

Not only were the characters adorable, but they felt very real to me. Although Denver's struggles may not seem as serious as Adam's, they have affected him deeply enough to put a dent in his self-esteem and how he led his life. Adam's illness is something he has been living with for years, but add to that some recent events in his life and you can understand why he feels like his life is spiraling out of control.

I loved everything about this story.

As with previous books, Heidi Cullinan, has managed to bring together an engaging story filled with emotion, humor and sizzling sexual chemistry. I had my doubts about how she was going to bring Adam and Denver, two complete opposites, together and make it work. The writing was everything I have come to expect from this author and so much more. The interactions between the main characters were entertaining and their dialogue was both amusing and revealing. I loved the way Denver talked to Adam and how he went to great lengths to make him feel safe. I found myself cheering them on, not only as a couple but as individuals as well.

I have to say that I really, really enjoyed how these two were brought together and I'm not only referring to the scene at the laundromat. Although that one moment was awesome, I appreciated that the author didn't rush them into a relationship and gave them both time to question, hesitate and decide. Their journey into a relationship took place within months, but their declarations of love took more time which in my opinion added to its believability. Although she added a lot of drama into the plot, especially with Adam's illness and his struggles, I did not feel overwhelmed by the details or the events she brought to the page. Actually, if I felt overwhelmed at all was when I got to read these two getting it on. Phew, these two really set my tablet on fire - their chemistry was that hot!.

I am glad that I decided to visit Tucker Springs for a few days, especially since this las visit was such a treat to read. I will certainly be reading the next book in the series when it comes out.

A sweet romance with a bit of kink...

This book was so much more than I expected coming from the description. While I have read Second Hand (TS #2), this book was in a different league (note that this can be read stand alone).

We are briefly introduced to Denver in Second Hand as El's best friend and the heavily muscled bouncer at the local gay club who enjoys the benefits of that job, all the twinks and college boys he wants. He encounters Adam at the laundromat, and intervenes as Adam is being harassed by a group of drunken frat boys. Adam shows Denver his appreciation and Denver gives Adam his number.

Adam is suffering from severe OCD and anxiety and has just moved out of his shared house to his own apartment after the end a relationship with his housemate. That relationship has really done a number on Adam's head yet thanks to school, he is still having to put up with his ex.

A lot of time is spent dealing with Adam's mental illness and Adam's belief that he can never have a relationship as a result of it. Denver, however finds the quirks an endearing part of Adam and will do anything to convince him that he will not be easy to get rid of. While I was surprised at the BDSM element, it was fairly mild. The fact that Denver is so sweet with Adam actually had me tearing up in few spots.

Another great secondary character is Adam's newfound friend Louisa, who also helps Adam navigate his relationships with Denver and his ex Brad. Definitely recommended for anyone who loves a good M/M romance.

A Vast DEPARTURE in Tone for the Series

So far this is the third novel in the Tucker Springs series that I have read and for the most part I really enjoy the series, especially the realistic interactions between seemingly unrealistic couples. But this novel starts to slowly move away from the tone of unlikely and unlucky lovers happening to find each other, into a story deeply rooted in BDSM. The story begins with Denver (a bouncer at the local gay bar) saving Adam (A Graduate Student studying Bugs at the local college) from a gang of drunk frat boys picking on him and launches into the unlikely relationship between a 30-something high school drop out gym rat and an OCD riddled, incredibly smart Adam. But about half way through the book Adam's OCD becomes a front concern for all involved and the book quickly moves into rather graphic (for the tone set in this series) depictions of S&M, Punishment and Humiliation. It wasn't so much the content off the book that put me off, but it was no warning and it feels like it came out of left-field, and unfortunately I'm left with 30% of a book I was enjoying that I don't know if I will be able to finish.

OUTSTANDING Debut

If rating's were given by how many times one reaches for tissues while reading a story this would garner an even dozen! I thought my heart would break several times with the pure poetry of heartfelt emotions this debut author evoked in this absolutely marvelous love story!

Kathryn and Larson Jennings, fell in love; lost one another; then through enormous trials of faith, rediscovered the truest meaning of God's love. Kathryn had, for the last ten years, wed for better or worse and loved Larson deeply even though the marriage hadn't quite live up to what she'd expected. Kathryn had come from wealth and Larson wanted to give her the life he felt she deserved but with each failure he felt less and less worthy of that love. While Larson loved Kathryn with his whole being, the issues he'd never dealt with of growing up with a mother who raised him in a brothel left a lingering distrust of his beautiful wife (basically women in general) .

As both struggled with the daily trials of making a success of their ranch, a tragic and crushing act of violence led them down paths that would see them rediscovering their faith in the Lord and ultimately to find their way back to one another. Along the way each would be touched by the `friends' God sent along their way of rediscovery to give them a second chance at love.

*** Tamera Alexander has penned an OUTSTANDING debut lyrically rich in life's lessons and faith in God's love featuring two very likeable protagonists. Fabulous first novel debut!

Kathryn Jennings loves her husband, but life's disappointments have weighed her down. When Larson disappears one night, Kathryn doesn't know what to think. She fights to save their ranch, but discovers Larson had a secret that nearly destroys her efforts. Larson Jennings cannot separate his present from his past. His continual struggle toward overcoming his past threatens his marriage and his life. Faced with an unexpected trial, Kathryn and Larson must each choose whether or not they will accept the other, not as they see themselves, but as God sees them. Their future together hinges on whether they can rebuild shattered trust even when circumstances scream that renewed faith in each other is unwarranted.

Tamera Alexander displays innate writing talent with her well-crafted first novel. Alexander skillfully weaves an excellent tale using historical details and well-developed characters that seem like real people, reminding us of the depth of God's forgiveness and love. I can't wait to read her next novel, Revealed, due out in November 2006.

Rekindled is a rare & delightful love story. While most romances (which I greatly enjoy) are stories of people meeting and falling in love, Tamera Alexander takes a different, refreshing direction. She pulls us deep into the lives of Kathryn and Larson Jennings, a couple married for ten years, and shows how God can take love even deeper--"rekindling" it--even when every outward sign indicates their love, and marriage, are over. This was an amazing first novel, and I greatly look forward to reading more compelling stories from Tamera.

Story #2: Hatim Al-Taaee promises to feed his neighbor's children even though he has nothing to feed his own, gives away a fortune and is humbled by the generosity of an orphaned bedouin youth.

Story #3: Owes bin Haritha is given a costly gift which causes his jealous peers to hire a poet to publicly ridicule him. When the overzealous poet insults Owes' mother, Owes swears vengeance on the man and angrily pursues him.

Story #4: Al-Numan bin Al-Munthir, the king of Al-Heira, loses his way one dark night and is taken in by a friendly bedouin couple. Later, the king finds himself in the uncomfortable position of sentencing his kind host to death.

Story #5: Abd Al-Muttalib bin Hisham, a Qurashi elder, swears to sacrifice one of his sons to god in return for being blessed with ten healthy, strong adult sons. Years later, surrounded by his ten adult sons, Abd Al-Muttalib is haunted by his oath. If he does not sacrifice one of his sons, might god take away all ten of them?

Story #6: Ghaelan bin Salamah bravely volunteers to go speak with Kisra, the king of the Persians, on whose lands he and his fellow merchants have inadvertently trespassed. Will his smooth words pave the way to great profits or an early grave?

Story #7: Abu Sufyan is interrogated by the Roman Emperor Heraclius who is trying to determine the veracity of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Story #8: Hajib bin Zurarah grows weary of the terrible drought afflicting his tribe's lands so he proposes the idea of traveling to the borders of the Persian kingdom and temporarily settling there. The journey is long and arduous and, once they arrive there, they may be turned away by the formidable king of the Persians, Kisra.

Story #9: Abu Al-Qassim Al-Tanbouri keeps his old madas (leather sandals) and replaces the worn out parts rather than buying a new pair of madas. Then, through a series of unfortunate events, Al-Tanbouri's madas cause him to go to jail, repeatedly.

Story #10: A knight, a housewife and a bedouin man use their agile wits to make sure things go their way.

Fables from Arabia...

In addition to creation myths, societies have evolved fables that embody certain moral lessons, and these are passed on from generation to generation. In the West, there are Aesop's fables, the stories of Hans Christian Anderson, as well as the Canterbury Tales of Chaucer. Each has developed its own "momentum," and both declare and help shape key values of that society. Some of the fables have universal applications; others seem to be unique to that society. Having lived in Saudi Arabia for a number of years I have heard a few of their fables. I particularly delighted in one that seemed unique to the Kingdom, but definitely has universal applications. In brief, the tale involved a large hole on the side of the road, with people falling in, injuring themselves, and needing to be transported to the hospital. Numerous "efficiency experts" keep examining the problem, and "tweaking it" with improvements, without addressing the fundamental issue. As I said, universal applications.

So, when I learned about this compilation of fables from Arabia, by Aisha Bilal, I felt it was a necessary read. Hatim, and his generosity, is a tale famous throughout the Arabian Peninsula. More so than most, and no doubt due to the transitory and harsh existence in Bedouin society, generosity towards strangers is a prized virtue. Hatim personifies it. Several of the tales relate a person's relationship with the powerful. Are the latter just or not? In the fourth tale, the king, Al-Numan bin A-Munthir is depicted as being arbitrary and capricious. A key subtext to this tale, as well as several others, is the importance of honoring one's given word by actions. This is particularly important in the last tale: "Three Nimble Minds." Another subject which is woven into more than one tale is the relationship between the Arabs and the Persians. It is a fundamental concern, which all too many people in the West, who think that Persians are Arabs, tend to forget.

The "finagle," or sometimes what is known as the art of compromise, was developed in the fifth fable, concerning a rash promise made to sacrifice the life of one of the sons if all grew up to be healthy. Think my favorite was the fable about Al-Tanbouris's madas. These are his leather sandals. He viewed it as a virtue to repair them, and not discard them, by buying new ones. However, this "virtue" turned into a millstone around his neck, causing numerous appearances in Court before a judge. And even when Al -Tanbouris recognized that his virtue was a millstone, it seemed almost impossible to take appropriate corrective action.

In the West, the Middle East, and, in particular, the Arabian peninsula, is viewed through a prism of geo-political concerns which has spawned a small "cottage industry" that promotes a negative and distorted view of the region. Reading these fables is a useful antidote to all the propaganda and biased images, as Edward Said so eloquently described in his classic book, Orientalism. Ms. Bilal's compilation of fables is rendered in excellent, straightforward English. 5-stars.

always interested in the history of various people around the world .this book of the people of Arabia helps to bring together all people. Because all can identify with these stories...

a Middle Eastern flair

I enjoyed this collection of stories with morals at the end and a Middle Eastern flair. Each one had a unique cast of characters and situations. I hesitate to call all of them short stories. I didn't pay attention to word count, but some of these might qualify as flash fiction. I wanted some areas to be more fleshed out, but I saw where the author was going with the brevity of these pieces.
