A page-turner that stays with you...

Tracie Peterson is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine. She continues to produce such incredible books, it's hard not to enjoy her.

And this first book in her newest series, "Song of Alaska" is no different. The vivid detail of the late 1800s, the depth of the characters' lives and stories, the engaging story holding you hostage even long after you've finished the book. I can't wait til the book in the series comes out!

One of the things I have come to appreciate in Tracie's writing is her ability to address questions of faith without coming across in a "preachy" manner, and this book is no exception to that. Throughout the book, several of the character voice their questions about trusting God to one another in a similar way that you or I might address such questions. Time and time again, the answers are the simple truths of Scripture.

This story starts with trouble - a forced, abusive marriage ending abruptly due to death - and trials continue throughout. Lydia Gray has finally escaped her abusive marriage of the past 12 years and has run off to live with her aunt in the newly acquired property of the USA, known as Alaska. In Alaska, she finds the unthinkable - God's love & the true love of a man. However, her past manages to find her, and things quickly escalate from bad to worse. Will God prove Himself faithful to her yet again? Will He answer her prayers the way she wants to see them answered?

This is an edge-of-your seat "easy" read that all historical/inspirational fiction readers will enjoy! Pick it up at your local bookstore or library today!!

More Alaskan Adventures

Recently widowed Lydia Gray is not sad; she is actually relieved that her late husband Floyd cannot torment her any longer. Lydia's marriage was a business arrangement between her father and Floyd, a practice not uncommon in 1870 in Kansas City. She is surprised to learn that she inherited Floyd's entire estate. Determined to break free from any ties to Floyd's greedy and insensitive adult children, she secretly makes plans to move to Sitka, Alaska, where Aunt Zerelda, her only remaining relative, lives. A bit of intrigue ensues as Lydia makes her way to Sitka where she finds herself in the arms of Kjell Lindquist. Literally! Kjell catches Lydia right off the boat, sick and worn from her travels. The plot thickens as Lydia fights her way out of a web of bitterness and distrust from the treatment she received at Floyd's hands. Will Zerelda's gentle faith speak to Lydia? Will Lydia accept this new land as her own? Will Kjell have any part in Lydia's future? And what of Floyd's family, will their greed drive them to drastic measures? The beauty of the Alaskan territory comes alive in Ms. Peterson's latest book. I have yet to find a book of hers that I disliked. She is a wonderful story teller; her stories have depth and an eternal message. Check this one out; adventure and surprises await!

Disappointing

Perhaps, I just wasn't in the mood for this novel. It could have been a sweet, Christian romance in which a strong heroine deals with her painful past, falls in love, and adjusts to life in the picturesque Alaskan frontier. Instead, I felt that the author Tracie Peterson was trying to juggle too many subplots in the air at once. I found the villainous Gray family stereotypical. (Picture the Ewings from "Dallas" in Kansas City, Missouri of the late 1800s.) I felt the original set up was promising: a suddenly wealthy widow hiding in the remote Alaskan town of Sitka from her unscrupulously, greedy in-laws. I found the plot line involving Evie a bit sleazy and unnecessarily complicated. The story of the infant kidnapping was illogical to me in execution as well as motivation. And frankly, infants being kidnapped is not my favorite plot device so the author started losing me there big time. The amnesia, as it was written, was a bit melodramatic. In fact, the many melodramatic twists and turns pretty much strangled the characters for me. However, how much can I complain when it was free? So bottom line, disappointing after a promising start.

About the Author
Dr. S. Graham Kelly has been a faculty member and administrator at The University of Akron since 1982. Dr. Kelly has served The University of Akron in its administration as Associate Provost and most recently as Interim Dean of Engineering.

Worse than useless

This book is incoherent and riddled with errors. Trying to instruct from it is a nightmare, so I can't imagine trying to learn from it. Even when I already know what the author is trying to say from previous experience, it is impossible to follow his thoughts. There are literally dozens of serious errors.

About the Author
Professor of English and Women's Studies at The Pennsylvania State University, Cheryl Glenn is widely known for her scholarship, leadership, and teaching. Besides authoring THE HARBRACE GUIDE TO WRITING and co-authoring THE HARBRACE HANDBOOKS, she is author of the prize-winning RHETORIC RETOLD: REGENDERING THE TRADITION FROM ANTIQUITY THROUGH THE RENAISSANCE; UNSPOKEN: A RHETORIC OF SILENCE; RHETORICAL EDUCATION IN AMERICA; and several other titles. Glenn's rhetorical scholarship has earned her many awards, including three National Endowment for the Humanities awards, the Conference on College Composition and Communication's Richard Braddock Award, Rhetoric Review's Outstanding Essay Award, and Best Book/Honorable Mention from the Society for the Study of Early Modern Women. She has served as President of the Coalition of Women Scholars in the History of Rhetoric and Composition, and is a member of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) Executive Committee, Chair of the Modern Language Association (MLA) Division on the History and Theory of Rhetoric and Composition, and a member of the MLA Delegate Assembly. Glenn's teaching and scholarship have earned her three university teaching awards. She has recently served as Chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, the largest organization of writing and rhetoric teachers in the world. Professor of English at Central Washington University, Loretta Gray has three degrees related to her interest in composition and applied linguistics: Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language (School for International Training), Master of Arts in Spanish (Middlebury College), and Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Linguistics (Boston University). She has experience teaching English to non-native speakers in Mexico, Spain, and the United States. In addition, she taught Spanish at Clemson University and applied linguistics at the School for International Training. Dr. Gray has been teaching composition and applied linguistics courses at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, since 1992. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole series. Great Christian history lesson with colorful characters. The story lines are woven together so well. Situations that could have been repetitive from book to book, we're not at all. It all came together in the end but I would like a continuation.

Enthralling!

I realized what a glorious text this was after I read thru it for the second time. The first time thru I got the impression that the storyline was somewhat scattered. But I was wrong. Thank you, Mrs. Oke and Mr. Bunn, for keeping the language and mannerisms true to the era and cultures portrayed in the books.
