Already Waiting For the Sequel!

Rain Song was an absolute pleasure to read and absorb. Alice Wisler does a marvelous job taking the reader to Nicole's world in N. Carolina. I couldn't wait for each new chapter to see what would happen next. It was a refreshing change from so many Christian novels that are, let's be honest, full of nothingness.

Each character came alive for me while I read. It reminded me a lot of my own family. I believe that everyone has an Aunt Iva in their family, a Monet, and if we're lucky enough, a Harrison.

As a middle school English teacher in N. Carolina, I appreciated every facet of the book. I am actually going to see about having it read by my eighth graders in the spring. With the discussion questions at the end of the book, it's perfect! The questions are initially posed with regard to the book, afterwhich, they tie into the reader's personal life. An opportunity for personal growth are at hand if one is wise enough to respond with an open and honest heart.

I only have one thing that I didn't really like about the book ... when it ended. I am ready for the sequel, Ms. Wisler! Thank you for sharing this part of you with the world. We await the next, impatiently!

Rain Song

Nicole Michelin lives in fear. She avoids airplanes, motorcycles, her past and Japan - the land where her mother died. She lives in fear of her grandmother's death and only finds solace in her fish and her writing. Her online column at the Pretty Fishy Website attracts the attention of one Harrison Michaels. As Nicole and Harrison correspond, he reveals that he knew her as a child and that their parents were friends. Nicole is intrigued, but very hesitant when Harrison suggests that she visit him in Japan. After all, that would require riding in an airplane. Ultimately, this story is about confronting fear and experiencing liberty.

I quite liked the main character narrating the story. The author gave her a unique and pleasing sense of humor. Unfortunately, I was quite dissatisfied with the book. I try to not be overly critical in my book reviews, but there were some issues that bothered me. The synopsis of this book made it sound like a romance. There was little to none. There was potential in the concept, but the author chose not to execute it. Also, I noticed at that author slipped from present tense to past tense writing at points where it should not have been done. I can understand the change if the the narrator were to begin recounting an event from her past. However, this particular slip was not made at such a point. Not only was it poor grammar, but it made for uncomfortable reading. But my biggest complaint about the book is that it stopped right in the middle of her visit to Japan. There was no epilogue, no sequel. Just a bunch of openness and things that were unresolved. (Her relationship with Harrison, her relationship with her father, etc.)

Excellent new author to watch...

"Rain Song" chronicles the story of Nicole Michelin, a young woman filled with fear and held motionless by a hole in her heart that longs to be filled. Tragedy entered her life at the tender age of two, leaving blank spots that desperately need to be colored in.

Through what appeared to be chance, Nicole has found a friend in Harrison Michaels via email. He discovers her through her articles posted online at Pretty Fish, a website for lovers of aquatic beauty.

What Nicole soon discovers is that nothing about God's plan is random: from the moment she was taken in by her grandmother, to the quirky Southern family who helped raise her...even to the random email from Harrison...all tie together to heal Nicole of her fear and her questions about the past.

Her biggest fear involves her life of two years in Japan where her parents served as medical missionaries...where she lost her mother and all memories of her life in Japan. Harrison lives in Japan...and he remembers Nicole.

Can she release her fear long enough to ask the questions her heart yearns to have answered? Or will Nicole push Harrison away, leaving the past as a gaping heart hole that nothing but answers can fill?

Alice paints a vivid picture that slowly captivates the reader. That ache inside Nicole will awaken any ache you've had buried inside your heart. That sense of mystery that surrounds many of us--you'll find a kindred soul in Nicole.

And those fears that entangle us and hold us back? Alice's slow, Southern style, filled with Grandma Ducee's Southern Truths, will carefully unwind the burial clothes that enshroud us and set us free.

You simply have to be like Nicole and step out in faith and learn the "Rain Song" of Alice J. Wisler and her cast of beloved characters. I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of Nicole, Harrison, and the entire McCormick/Michelin clan...at least, I'm hoping so.

Great for teachers

This book contains a series of allegorical short stories that can be understood by elementary school children and adults, too. I can confidently say both readers will greatly enjoy these stories. Like "The little prince", they deal with simple and yet profound aspects of life and human beings that will make you meditate on them. The reading is entertaining and colorful, but not dragging. I just wish there would be a translation in English, so that English readers could also be able to enjoy it. If you understand Spanish, you should definitely read it.

Este libro contiene pequeños cuentos que dejan mucho que pensar. Unos mas extensos que otros, otros que con solo algunas frases estimulan al igual que un cuento extenso. Algunos cuentos son tan cortos que no sabría si llamarlos cuento pero no por eso son inferiores a los demás. En esta colección se encuentran cuentos que llevan una enseñanza, una moraleja. Mi cuentos favoritos fueron "Codicia" e "Ilusion". Uno se puede ver reflejado en la obra de Bucay. Si no tienes tiempo de leer una novela o simplemente al igual que yo disfrutas mucho de los cuentos cortos y necesitas una resolución rápida a una narración, este libro es el indicado.

Excellent for Spanish Learners

This is a fantastic tool to use if you're trying to move into Spanish fluency from, say, an "I took four years in school but can't speak in sentences" stage. The stories are great and interesting enough to listen to more than once. The CD in the back of the book allows you to listen while reading along, which helps immensely. I haven't found another book like it.

Inspirational romance about 19th century Wyoming

Simone can't imagine that God could love her when all she has known is cruelty. She runs away when her father sells her but, on the lam, she finds people that really care about her. She also learns that God cares about her, and so does Jeffery and falls in love with him.

An Emotional Read!!

Ms. Peterson has penned another truly inspirational read with her story "Shelter of Hope." This is really a story about never giving up no matter how severe the situation and always keeping faith, no matter how small it might be.

Simone Dumas knows nothing but heartache in her early years. Her mother and baby brother are killed by her father when they attempt to reach help from the abusive Louis Dumas. Simone, feeling as is her mother has turned her back on her and doesn't love her anymore turns her back first knowing in her heart that she will never see her alive again. She is right. Fast ward two years Simone is just entering womanhood, having learned how to deal with her father's rages. She is shocked when her father comes back to their cabin informing her that she has been sold along with the property to a man she doesn't know. Simone knows that she can't take anymore and wants a better life for herself. With daring she escapes and begins to forge a new path but not without the fear that her father will learn of her deceit.

Jeffery O'Donnell has no idea that the beautiful young girl that has made her way into his office is going to be his future. He is drawn to the sweet Simone, but can tell that she has secrets. She needs a job and has applied to become "A Harvey Girl." Jeffery takes a chance and hires Simone, as he needs respectable girls for many positions. Slowly Simone opens up and with the help of her friends Una and Rachel she begins to heal, add to that the growing attraction that she has for Jeffery, and his gentle patience Simone starts to believe in a happy ending. But, will her past creep up and ruin what she's managed to accomplish?

I knew the instant I read the "bet" (you just need to read the book) between Jeffery and Simone that their relationship was going to be special and romantic. The historical information regarding the "Harvey Girls" was interesting and a fun vehicle for this story. Ms. Peterson always manages to gift the reader with a truly emotional read. As a result I suggest that you find a quite corner to cozy up, have Kleenex ready, and be swept back to a place and time that no longer exists.

An Interesting Book

This book was interesting. I have been fascinated with the Harvey Girls for a while, but haven't had the opportunity to read much about them (other than watching the Judy Garland movie). I liked the way that Ms. Peterson wove historical elements into her fictional landscape. The country was a different place in the late 1800s and I believe that this story illustrates that. Simone's father held dominion over her in everyway until he sold her--and even then, still controlled her life through fear of discovery. Only with the redeeming power of her confession to God, love of Jeffery can she take back her life--but first she has to learn not only to trust again, but to allow people to become close to her.
A good book and I am going to pick up book 2.
