Don't expect an ending to this story....

I love Tracie Peterson and she writes well, BUT. Let's have an ending. I have read the first 2 books in this series (I only skimmed the second) and still Franny has not had an ending to her story. Perhaps others like for the plot to continue through several books but I like to have a conclusion. I love series where the characters trade the lead in the story but don't force me to buy the next book in order to see how the story ends.

Abrupt ending, one dimensional characters, no growth/progression, all around terrible

Let me just preface this review with this: I read trashy romance novels and badly written fanfiction all the time. I have low standards and even lower expectations! But based on the reviews of this book, good lord, I thought I'd be reading something that would at least deserve three stars. But this was legitimately TERRIBLE.

Also: SPOILER ALERTS!!!!! (all over the place)

I remember getting 25% into this book and thinking, "In the name of all things shiny and sparkly, WHY HASN'T THE BOOK GONE ANYWHERE?" I'm serious. All you get is the background of the story and then snippets of the characters. Fanny is this weirdly contradictory character. She's all sassy and look-at-me-I'm-rebelling-against-society-because-I-like-fishing!!!!!, and everyone keeps going on and ON about how smart she is, and she has semi-smart moments of, "Hmmm, that's odd..." when something is fishy, but she does nothing. Seriously, it takes her a mention of her boyfriend (let's just get this out of the way: NOTHING HAPPENS BETWEEN THEM, I mean even their kiss is lame. I realize it's religious fiction, but the build up to their romance was so, so, SO slow and the way it was finally realized between the two characters was just incredibly unsatisfactory!)--a mention of her boyfriend and she becomes a world class ditz. Then, oh good LORD, all she talks about is how ugly she is compared to her cousins (there's another topic to discuss!!) and I swear, fifty of the pages is devoted to that give or take throughout the WHOLE STINKIN' BOOK.

Let's just say that to say Fanny completely annoys the shadoodles (see what I did there Amazon? I am cutting out my profanity! all distasteful content!) out of me is an understatement. Her entire existence is WOE IS ME, everyone-I-love-dies!!!!!! and she never shuts up about it, I stg. I really wanted to just reach through the pages and slap her upside the head, Gibbs-style.

Her COUSINS. Oh my giddy aunt. Amanda is your typical bore who has a bizarre spurt of CHARACTER GROWTH!!! out of the blue. She is a petty, whiny, holier-than-thou character that acts as that mother you don't need. In other words, girl is a Mary Sue. No characterization whatsoever, I can't even imagine a whole book about her. Sophie of course has to be the Exact Opposite because that is clearly how character foils work, obviously, and so she is your typical bad girl who oOOooh! sneaks out to go to parties! lets boys take off her shoes! and then of course has a love interest that is basically Amanda in male form for sexual tension!!!!

It is painful to relive this book in my head while thinking about the worst bits to complain about in this review.

I mean, this book is basically the repeat of the first thirty pages, with the additional spice of the most HILARIOUS villain I have ever read. Like, I honestly can't believe he's REAL in a fictional world. He is just... hilarious. He is that villain in TV shows who openly proclaims, "I'M TAKING OVER THE WORLD!" I mean, it is what he does in the book, and everyone around him is too stupid to realize it. The characters are an embarrassment to imaginary human beings. I was expecting some kind of resolution about his idiotic villainous plans, but NOTHING HAPPENS. You're just left going what-the-actual-fiddlesticks-is-this-shrimpfest when the book SUDDENLY ENDS (like in the last ten pages everything FINALLY!!!! comes to head--I'm approximating since this is on the Kindle, but) and NOTHING HAS HAPPENED TO THIS GUY. I mean are you for REAL. IT WAS AWFUL.

It was pretty much the only reason why I kept reading. I was waiting for Fanny to actually BE awesome instead of everyone just saying that she was awesome even though she kept going, nOooo I'm not awesome!!!--and, well, everyone can just be left disappointed because NOTHING HAPPENED and her darling villainous uncle is still cackling away evilly. Seriously, by the end, I'd just given up on finding out if anything does happen to good ol' jolly Uncle Baddy. I really don't want to deal with reading about pansy pants Amanda and bad girl Sophie to find out if even ANYTHING will. IT PROBABLY WON'T, NOTHING HAPPENS IN THIS BOOK ANYWAY.

IN SUMMARY, IT WAS BAD BECAUSE:
The main characters wanted me to poke sporks up their noses. AND NOTHING HAPPENS!!!!!

Nearly 80 entries, written by an international group of theologians and professors of theology, describe the life, works, theology, and significance of Christian theologians, ranging from Augustine of Hippo in the early centuries to Paul Tillich in the twentieth. Entries are grouped by chronological era and then arranged alphabetically. In addition to articles on specific individuals, a few entries describe some contemporary theological approaches (e.g., Black theology, Process theology), which include mention of the theologians who are exponents of that perspective. Care has been taken to ensure that theologians from all periods of Christian history have been included and that Catholic, Protestant, Evangelical, liberal, and feminist perspectives are represented. That said, the emphasis is clearly on the Western churches. One limitation, readily acknowledged by the editor, is the relatively small number of theologians included. Those selected here are theologians likely to be found in an introductory course on Christian theology. A worthy competitor, Greenwood’s Biographical Dictionary of Christian Theologians (2000), treats more than 450 and also includes an assessment of their work, theology, and significance, not limited to just biographical information as its title might imply. A criterion for inclusion in the Greenwood work, however, is that the theologian must have died before 1994. As a consequence, many of the contemporary theologians included in the Wiley-Blackwell set (e.g., James Cone, George Lindbeck, and Rosemary Radford Ruether) will not be found in the Greenwood volume. And the definition of theologian as understood by the Greenwood work precluded the inclusion of Martin Luther King Jr. and C. S. Lewis, both of whom are treated in the Wiley-Blackwell volumes. A number of essays written by graduate students!

This is targeted to students, but is written by a number of graduate students (in addition to established scholars). It would have been better to have used exclusively a team of seasoned theologians writing the chapters. How can one trust the judgment of graduate students in evaluating major theologians? It is inappropriate. Sorry. Also, not worth the money...there are so many other BETTER (and less expensive) options on the market.

Some typos

This collection is very good value but there are a few too many typos for me to give it five stars.

For example, at least sometimes when a dash should appear, a question mark appears instead: for example, in Section VI of In Memoriam: "That 'Loss is common to the race'?"; in XXXIX of In Memoriam: "But Sorrow?fixt upon the dead"; in the same section: "And darkening the dark graves of men,?"

All these question marks are errors.

Another example of a typo: in XXXIII of In Memoriam this appears: "See thou, that countess reason ripe"

This should be: "See thou, that countest reason ripe".

Also sometimes instead of an apostrophe, an opening quotation mark appears.

Flaw in formatting

This Delphi production of Tennyson's works is excellent in many ways, not least the well-defined illustrations. But going to In Memoriam I'm disappointed to see that the formatting's wrong. It's essential that stanza breaks be marked, and they aren't.

I liked the layout when I looked in the sample but...Couldn't find Ulysses, a favourite of many Tennyson fans, so I'm not sure whether its complete or not.

At such a crisis it seems as if the world itself were actually beginning to awake — as if the shock that had broken the slumbers of so many were about to shake the whole world together. Yet alas! the tokens of life soon vanish. The half-awakened sleepers sink back into deeper slumber, and the startled world lies down in still more sad and desperate security.

The history of the Church is full of these awakenings, some on a larger and some on a smaller scale. Indeed, such narratives as those with which this work abounds form the true history of the Church, if we are to take our ideas of this from the inspired Church-history given us in the Acts of the Apostles. Many a wondrous scene has been witnessed from the day of Pentecost downwards to our own day, and what volume better deserves the attention and study of the believer than that which contains the record of these outpourings of the Spirit? Besides the interest that cleaves to them there is much to be learned from them by the Church. To see how God has been working, and to mark the means and instruments by which he has carried on his work, cannot fail to be profitable and quickening. It makes us sensible of our own shortcomings, and it points out the way by which the blessing may be secured."

Who is qualified to write on revivals and the kind of men that God uses is such times?I am convinced that the author of this booklet was such a man.He was a Pastor for over fifty years.After preaching in the morning service he would go out in the streets and evangelistically preach in the town.He wrote tracts(booklets)to help his congregation in their evangelistic efforts.One such booklet which is taken from 'The Kelso Tracts' is also published by Chapel Library 'The Sin Bearer'.It is dripping with the fragrance and power of Evangelistic Proclamation'.In this booklet Bonar formally gives the reader nine characteristics of the type of Spirit Filled Men that our Lord has used in times of awakening,but he actually gives ten,because in introducing his subject he writes of-"...the world...still sleeping its sleep of death".He also asserts that there has never been a time-"when it could be said there is not one awake." One of the characteristics of men that God uses is that they are not asleep.They are awake to the peculiar dangers of their age-worldliness,formalism,idolatry,atheism,relativism,religious pluralism... .These worldly philosophies all have this in common;they are intent on keeping men anesthetized to the dangers of the Lord's judgement which is imminent.

Horatius Bonar is eminently qualified to write on this particular subject because his life and ministry clearly reveal-A watchman that need not be ashamed,who was not slumbering but labored diligently to be an instrument,in the hands of his Lord,to give solemn warning to the great multitude,in his generation,that were 'sleeping the sleep of death'.We must ask the question,I must ask myself the question-Am I willing to be such a watchman for my Prophet,Priest and King,if I am so called? In a generation that is 'amusing itself to death' and 'sleeping the sleep of death' ,storing up treasures of wrath that will soon come upon their heads;what is needed is bold watchmen who will preach to the 'dry bones' that saturate our generation,and look to our Sovereign Lord to bring life(spiritual life)where the stench of death surrounds us.
