About the Author
The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best-selling calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.

Half a book

When I saw the price of this book, it seemed too good to be true--- it was. This is only half of the book. Great if you're only taking the first half but USELESS if you plan to take the whole class or the second half.

I got scammed

This textbook was a misrepresentation. It contained only the first 6 chapters of the full textbook which was not made evident in the order. Worse, every attempt I have made to contact Amazon has been unsuccesful. It has been too difficult to establish any sort of dialogue about this problem. I feel that I have been stiffed for the cost of this book which has been of zero use to me.

This book does a poor job of explaining the concepts

This book does a poor job of explaining the concepts, it just shows you the work and expect you to figure out what happened without any words to back it up. Don't fall behind in class because this book will not help you catch up. There are also quite a few errors in this book.

About the Author
Karl Pillemer, Ph.D. is the Hazel E. Reed Professor of Human Development at Cornell University and Professor of Gerontology in Medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College. Since 1993, he has been Director of the Cornell Institute for Translational Research on Aging, a center devoted to using research to create interventions to improve the quality of life of older persons. For the past two decades, he has conducted a program of research involving staff in nursing homes and other long-term care environments. Projects have included a longitudinal study of relationships between family members of residents with staff in nursing homes, and the first scientific study of abuse of residents in long-term care. He has developed and evaluated a number of nursing home interventions, including model training, mentoring, and career ladder programs. These evidence-based interventions include "Partners in Caregiving," which builds cooperation and communication between nursing home staff and family members, and "Retention Specialist Program," which improves the ability of nursing homes to retain CNAs. He has written many scientific and trade articles on long-term care staffing, and is the author of the book "Solving the Frontline Crisis in Long-Term Care." Beyond the academic and professional community, Dr. Pillemer has created publications for frontline long-term care workers themselves, including the widely-used "The Nursing Assistant's Survival Guide." He is the founding editor of "Nursing Assistant Monthly," an educational newsletter that reaches thousands of nursing assistants nationwide. In addition, he has served as a consultant to long-term care providers, research groups, and trade organizations around the country and in Europe.

Christine Rheaume's nursing career includes patient care across the life span and in a variety of clinical specialties. She is owner of Rheaume & Associates legal nurse consulting services, and has ten years' experience as writer and editor for medical and nursing publications. A graduate of the University of California, San Diego, she earned her R.N. from Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing in Boston.

Be Aware this isn't a complete novel

I love historical novels and was interested in this fresh setting and situation. But early on I had reservations. For one thing I couldn't envision how it would be possible for Charlotte, A high class English Lady to be able to have a dalliance with a man who visits her parents home. With servants and her parents about, how on earth did she find an opportunity for physical intimacy in the drawing room? The characters are well drawn and the research is wonderful with all the information about Pullman. But as one other reviewer alluded, the ending was a shock-- not because of a dramatic shift but because this isn't a complete novel but more like an ongoing soap opera where there is no ending. As long as you don't mind reading an episode or else waiting for the entire series to be published so you can find out what happens, this is a great story. On the cover it says Postcards from PUllman 1. But nothing hints that it isn't a stand alone story.

This is not a complete novel and I wish I had known before I read the book. I wanted to know what would happen so I bought the second part and still the storry was unresolved. I decided not to buy the 3rd book because I feel this is a gimmick to make people buy 1 book for the price of three.

Just okay

For 75% of In the Company of Secrets, I really liked the story, the characters, and the historical charm of the era and Pullman, Illinois. Olivia is a strong heroine, with likeable and relatable qualities. She is a Christian but is struggling with what she truly believes. She always has quite a problem with honesty. In the beginning, Olivia and Lady Charlotte/Mrs. Hornsby concoct a story of lies to cover their backgrounds and the true identity of Mrs. Hornsby. They travelled together from Lanshire Hall in London. Olivia is hoping to get a position as assistant chef in a local hotel. "Mrs. Hornsby" is in search of a jilted lover.

My big complaint is the ending. Nothing is resolved, at all. It just ends. I should have had an inkling that this would be the case, since all throughout the book any impediment or plot twist was wrapped up too easily and abruptly.

I'm curious to read the second in the series, at least to find out how things were wrapped up but I don't think I'll be running out to buy it. Overall a bland and predictable story, and a disappointment.

§ Unlike his other commissions, Sargent sought out Madame Gautreau for the portrait, Madame X. This painting brought him negative criticism that cost him commissions.
§ He was an extremely gifted artist, having mastered impressionism, classical portraiture, landscapes, watercolor, murals and music.
