I've only seen short videos of this race. It's pretty cool to read about the details of the race from one participant's view.

This was a good read that kept me hooked most of the time. I highly recommend it.

Also, I have just started paragliding. I found this book very educational!

Kirsten (Kirt) Elling is a career paramedic who works for the Town of Colonie in upstate New York. She began EMS work in 1988 as an EMT/firefighter and has been a National Registered paramedic since 1991. She has been an EMS educator since 1990, teaching basic and advanced EMS programs at the Institute of Prehospital Emergency Medicine in Troy, New York. Kirt serves as Regional Faculty for the NYS DOH, Bureau of EMS and the American Heart Association. She has written numerous scripts for the EMS training video series PULSE: Emergency Medical Update. She is also the author and co-author of several books including The EMT-Basic Exam Review & The Emergency Medical Responder Exam Review, Why-Driven EMS Review, and The Paramedic Exam Review. Kirt was also a contributing author of the IPEM Paramedic Lab Manual, and an adjunct writer for the 1998 revision of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, EMT-Paramedic and EMT-Intermediate: National Standard Curricula and the 2007 Paramedic Practice Guidelines.

This novel deals with several issues that fascinate me.  Feminism is at the top of the list, and so is the history of medicine and the experience of women working in the field, both as physicians and nurses.  Of course the 1920s are in the zeitgeist at the moment--the social issues, the post-War period, the changes in class distinctions, and--we can't deny it!--the gorgeous clothes.  What startled me as I researched the period was how closely the 1920s resemble the current decade, despite the ninety years of strife and progress that have intervened.

Loved it!

A great story with wonderful historical detail. It was hard to put down and I found myself sneaking in a few pages here and there during the day (when I should have been doing other things) because I kept thinking about what was happening in the book. Terrifically rich characters. I gave this book to two other people and they both liked it too.

Seattle in 1920...romance, intrigue and strong characters

Have stayed up many late nights reading this story. I am from Seattle and the author is spot on about locations, weather etc. Margot is a doctor in the 1920's which we know would not be easy for a woman. Frank has lost his arm in WW1. Throw in a sadist brother and a former slave who is the family butler to the wealthy but dysfunctional family with early Seattle as a backdrop and this becomes a fast-paced historical novel very well written with a very strong and flawed characters. This is the first book I have read by the author but will be back for more.

3.5 stars & I'll Read the Sequel

I’m still a sucker for books that tout themselves as Downton-esque so I picked this one up & dove right in. Set in Seattle just after WWI the story takes us to Benedict Hall & the family & servants who reside there. I won’t spoil here but I will say this, I liked Margot and that she was a doctor quite determined to practise when it wasn’t considered a proper job for a woman. She was smart, sometimes awkward, most often sensible and very relatable. I also liked Frank Parrish, the Major back from the war where he’d lost an arm. He never gave up and despaired and still remained kind even when he was feeling ill at ease or unsure of his place in the world. I had no problem investing in and rooting for the two as a couple.

Preston was a nasty piece of work but he kept me page turning in a macabre way. I still want to know what made him so hateful and twisted. Margot is quite clear about him always having been that way and having tried multiple times when they were children to kill her with Blake being the only thing that stood in his way. So, I wondered what happened to make him that way. It’s not answered but I hope there’s some further insight in the next book (which I have on my desk to read). I’m still not sure how I feel about what is hinted at as his fate and I really didn’t know what to do with the “mystical sapphire” turn but still, I enjoyed reading this story for the most part. The scene setting was well done & gave a clear picture of Seattle at the time. I’d recommend this to anyone looking for another series to get into. It’s a fairly quick read & engaging enough to breeze through on the weekend. 3.5 star read for me.

About the Author

Fr. Dennis J. Billy, CSsR, is an American Redemptorist of the Baltimore Province with advanced degrees from Harvard University, The Pontifical University of St. Thomas (Angelicum), and The Graduate Theological Foundation. He taught for more than twenty years at the Alphonsian Academy of Rome's Pontifical Lateran University and is now scholar-in-residence, professor, and holder of the John Cardinal Krol Chair of Moral Theology at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, Overbrook, in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. Great book, but could be improved

I'm so glad these authors took the time to write this book. It exposed me to a whole new world, which I found very interesting. The book needs to be edited though. It has a huge number of grammatical and typographical errors and is rough around the edges. I hate when an otherwise good book needs to be dinged by lack of attention to detail. It could be improved further.
