Kay Bratt is a child advocate and author of the books Train to Nowhere, Chasing China, The Bridge, A Thread Unbroken, and the acclaimed memoir of the years she spent working in Chinese orphanages, Silent Tears: A Journey of Hope in a Chinese Orphanage. She has actively volunteered for several nonprofit organizations, including An Orphan’s Wish (AOW) and the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for abused and neglected children. In China, she was honored with the Pride of the City award for humanitarian work. After living in China for several years, Bratt now resides in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in South Carolina, with her husband, daughter, dog, and cat.

An eye-opening story of compassion and what makes a family

The Scavenger's Daughter is a modern-day novel that brings to our attention the dilemma of orphaned children in China through the story of Benfu, the trash collector, and the family of girls he and his wife, Calla Lilly, have raised. All of their girls were found abandoned on the streets, sometimes in the piles of trash Benfu sorts through. Over the years, adopted daughters have grown up and left home, making room for new girls who in their turn, grow up and leave.

When we first meet Benfu, he is a seventeen-year old during the height of the Cultural Revolution, beaten and imprisoned for his family background. He escapes to the city of Wuxi, where he is befriended by Calla Lilly and her parents.
But decades later, Benfu and Calla Lilly are old and tired, barely earning enough to feed their current family of six girls. They receive minimal assistance from the City Welfare Office; if not for the wages their eldest daughter Linnea brings to add to their tiny income, the elderly couple would not be able to continue caring for their children. Their biggest worry is becoming too weak and old to finish the job of raising the youngest girls, one of whom is blind, another a parapalegic.

Knowing this, Linnea looks for ways to take over as the family breadwinner and goes into a business partnership and a hesitant romance with a young man who is the son of a government official; in doing so she goes against her beloved father's wishes. A casualty of the Cultural Revolution, Benfu mistrusts the government absolutely and he is convinced no good will come of this association.

The Scavenger's Daughters is inspired by a true story. Author Kay Bratt spent five years in China, where she became actively involved with an orphanage. She began advocating for the children, pushing past red tape, indifference, and countless frustrations to rally the local expatriate community to help improve conditions at the orphanage. She wrote and self-published her first book to raise awareness of the desperate plight facing children in a society with the thinnest of social safety nets.

The premise of The Scavenger's Daughters hooked me and I agreed to read an advance copy. I have issues with some sections that read more like history lessons than conversations. There is a big story gap for me because we jump from the prologue, where Benfu escapes, to the present day and we don't learn much about how he managed to hide out in Wuxi all those years with Calla Lilly's family. Life was tightly regulated, neighbors spied on neighbors, and food purchases were limited by the coupons allotted to each family, so how they managed to overcome these obstacles would've been interesting.

However, these are minor issues compared to Bratt's details of life in a poor Chinese urban area and her ability to convey, with compassionate intelligence, the intricate dynamics of family, neighborhood, and local government that dominate much of Chinese society. Bratt has two sequels planned that follow the lives of this unusual family and I suspect they will fill some gaps in this story - which will make them well worth reading. I'm looking forward to the rest of the trilogy.

Beautiful and Thought-Evoking

This is a story full of morals and lessons, each one will touch a spot on your heart.

It begins with a boy...imprisoned, beaten, harmed, all because of his family background. All it takes is one act of kindness to change this boy's life and that of dozens of people. For when someone shows him this act of kindness, he vows he spend the rest of his life doing good for others.

The boy becomes a man, a trash collector. In China, daughters are discarded and abandoned a lot. He finds them in the trash and he keeps them, feeds them, clothes them, provides them as love as he can. With all these daughters, he's relegated to a life of poverty. They don't live like other people, but they have love. They have each other.

But what will happen to them all when he dies? He's very ill; he has no retirement, no savings; nobody is helping them.

The lessons that sum up beautifully in the pages...

-You can't judge a group as a whole by the actions of one or a few. There are bad and good in every bunch.
-Never let pride prevent from you getting help if it's needed and available. Don't deny those around you a better life because you can't bear to admit you need help.
-Karma happens. One good deed can change a life....as well as your own.
-One doesn't need material objects to have a fulfilling life.

Very well done and thought evoking. I truly felt as though I stepped in another world. Chinese customs and stories and revelations about Mao's reign and just how the Chinese live in general kept me absolutely entranced. My only quibble: I wish the book had told us more about the romance between Ye Ye and Nai Nai, but this is the first in a series. I imagine there may be a prequel in the future--at least I hope so.

yet it is full of love for family

Though I lived during the time of and half-way recall events of China's overthrow to communism, I was a young girl in America. What really captured my attention in this book was the detailed history I think other countries never knew about life before and during Chairman Mao's rise and rule. The story-line and various characters that were linked together were culturally unique and I found quite interesting - I kept wanting to read a few more pages at each setting to find out what happened that day. It's not an action book, but the treacherous times they lived in were full of twists. It's not what I consider a romance novel, yet it is full of love for family, community and hope.

About the Author
Dr. Russell Powell earned his Ph.D. in psychology under the late Frank Epling and David Pierce at the University of Alberta. As a long-standing faculty member at MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta, he has taught classes in learning and behavior for over 30 years using a variety of behaviorally inspired formats. He has published and conducted research in a wide range of areas, including operant conditioning, social psychology, sleep and dreams (especially nightmares), self-regulation, and history of psychology. Most recently, he helped identify the individual believed to have been Little Albert, the infant in whom Watson and Rayner (1920) attempted to condition a phobia of furry animals (American Psychologist; Powell, Digdon, Harris, and Smithson, 2014).

Lynne Honey -- a self-described "evolutionary behaviorist" -- completed a Ph.D. in experimental psychology in Jeff Galef's lab at McMaster University, studying the role of social learning on alcohol consumption in rats. She has published a number of papers on this topic and considers social learning to be one of the most powerful adaptations available to our species and others. Dr. Honey joined the Department of Psychology at MacEwan University in 2003 because of its focus on teaching and student engagement. She currently conducts research on human social behavior in an evolutionary context, including studies of social dominance, and the influence of personality traits on social behaviors. She also studies the effectiveness of various teaching methods, including peer-review and various uses of technology for learning, and has won an award for innovation in teaching.

Diane Symbaluk received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Alberta in 1997, with a specialization in criminology and social psychology. She joined MacEwan University in 1996 in order to pursue her joint passion for teaching and research mentorship. She has taught courses in a variety of areas including social psychology, criminology, statistics, and research methods. She is presently the faculty advisor for MacEwan University's Community-Based Sociology Project, a supervised student-led research program. Her extensive list of publications includes textbooks, journal articles, and more than forty pedagogical resources (e.g., study guides, test banks, instructor manuals, and online resources). A distinguished teaching award winner, Diane is currently conducting research on published student ratings of instruction and character strengths of award-winning instructors.

Fantastic Textbook for Behavioral Changes

I had to buy this textbook for a course entitled Learning and Behavior (focusing on behavioral changes through classical and operant conditioning). I have begun reading it and so far it is a wonderful textbook, as textbook goes it is on the smaller side so you don't have to worry about lugging around a large hefty book. Regarding the book itself, after each section there are quizzes to review all the information in said sections, these quizzes are fairly simple in the sense that the answers lie within the section and don't require much more searching. Each chapter is arranged that at the end there is a summary, chapter test, key/major definitions from the chapter, and chapter test answers. Having bought the textbook used the quizzes and chapter tests are filled in, whereas they wouldn't be there if the book was new. So far I like the format of the book, since its tools enhance productive studying and other preparation skills. I will be using this textbook since my professor said she will be using questions directly from it, which makes studying/preparation somewhat simpler.

Awesome text book.

Honestly, this is one of the best written text books I have come across, and it has plenty of materials to ensure that you retain the material--if you use them, of course. Sometimes I found it hard to put this book down, which is extremely odd for a text book haha. Do yourself a favor if you purchase this book: do the quizzes, the chapter tests, and read every additional box there is. Even if it doesn't really apply to what you instructor wants you to read, it is worth the time to read it anyway. Also, the cover is rather cute and I found it got me excited about opening it. :3

great story, poor editing

This collection of three "firsts"-- the first book in three series-- gave me a sampling of Morgan Rice's work. It was free on Amazon, fortunately, or I would have been furious.

It is an insult to the readers if an author doesn't bother to spell correctly. It says the author believes his or her readers are too ignorant to notice common misspellings. If this were a new author who relies on spellcheck and can't afford a real, live editor, I would be more understanding. However, more than a dozen pages were devoted to informing the reader that Morgan Rice (an obvious pseudonym, in my opinion) is a #1 bestselling author of more than thirty books. There were so many spelling errors it was distracting, and there's no excuse for an experienced author to do that.

These were the first books in three different series, and may have been written early in Rice's career. Still, once you have a few bucks, you pay a proofreader and correct those early errors. You don't just leave them there. In one of the books, I found an average of one error per page. Examples: waist for waste, site for sight, foul for fowl. When a character has to clean up the waist in the stables, prepare foul for dinner, and watches till something is out of site, it is sheer carelessness. A published book deserves more care than a text message.

My recommendation: if it's free, fine, but don't spend money on an author who insults your intelligence. The stories are good, and if I had listened to the audiobook I would have enjoyed them. In print, whether e-book or paper, the constant barrage of annoying errors just isn't worth it to any reasonably literate person.

I hope "3 beginnings" never ends...

3 great stories from one great author. Each one is completely different plot and set of characters. You have vampires, apocalypse type scenarios and Sci fi. It's not easy for a person to have such a vivid imagination to be able to deliver 3 different genres with such rich and compelling characters and descriptive backgrounds. I was thoroughly dissapointed when each story ended. I quickly looked for follow up books from each one. Great read for a good Ole fashioned "curl up in a chair on a rainy night book." Loved it

Good way to help you to discover which series you would most enjoy. Turned rushed. It went too quick. However Arenà One built gradually and was not as predictable. I have yet to read A Quest of Heros so I can't say anything about that one yet.
