I know you see these silos as starships taking people to a better world, but why all the heartache, why all of the lies?
By JJCEO
Donald Keene has been brought out of his sleep again. His first coherent thought was why? He never expected to ever be awoken again after what he admitted to the last time he was on a shift. Oddly enough everyone was calling him Mr. Thurman, The Man, and not by his real name. He finds himself in charge of all of the silos and in absolute power and it is all based on a lie.
He finds a hidden message that is titled "Urgent - The Pact" and it has a number on the message that he doesn't recognize. He has decided to use the powers he has to find out what the Pact is and what the plan behind the silos really is. Every part of the plan he peals back is like the layers of an onion and they all contain the sting of a lie. Donald realizes that whoever is in charge controls the fates of all of the people living in the silos. Now he has to decide if he is the judge, jury, executioner or the savior!
Whenever a writer puts their thoughts to paper they hope that they write something special that others will love to read, listen to and relish. Mr. Howey continues to prove that he has become one of those special writers that created a masterpiece. I find his books to be so captivating that I cannot put them down until I have finished them. His work on Wool is about the struggle of life for the survivors of the human race and about how they still don't have any freedom. His character development is spectacular and that is what I enjoy. I find myself rooting for the characters, feeling sorry for them and wishing that they live or die.
The story is about the powerful doing whatever they want and about the average person being a victim and at the mercy of those who think they have the plan for the world within their grasp and control. When powerful men find themselves at the helm of the destiny of mankind, we can only hope that they are not evil men.
This is an excellent book and series. I have read all of the stories and I recommend them to you as the best books I have read in 10 years.

An honest review
By BookGirl
Third Shift - Pact by Hugh Howey is the Final book in the `Shift' Series. It picks up from Second Shift, following Donny/Troy in Silo One. This particular book flashes back to Solo/Jimmy and how he survived the fall of his Silo.
**CONTAINS SPOILERS**
Again in this book like the previous Shift's, we see Donny struggle with the position that has been laid out for him. This time in a different way. Someone has switched his name with Thurman's, and now he is the unquestioned leader of Silo 1.
Now, this part did confuse me a just little. I realize that everyone has different shifts and a lot of people don't know each other because of the shifts (lack of socialization because their shift will end/not willing to interact with others etc) But I found it just a little far fetched that not a single person on Shift with Donny knew what Thurman looked like to realize that Donny was an imposter?
Donny continues struggles with his sense of self, piecing together Thurman's ultimate plans (which was as easy as going through Thurman's email...) which left me again unsatisfied. The way Donny deals with Anna made me feel as though the man I have followed since First Shift is no longer the same one. To avenge his wife's death (which was how many years ago?!) and his sudden rise to absolute power (oh no!) it seemed very comical. She pleads (repeatedly!) that she has something VERY important to tell him, but yet he kills her anyway. It was almost something like a B grade Horror Movie!
I felt the parts that included Jimmy, except for the chapters of when he was young, were already explained in the previous SILO books. When Juliette meets Silo he tells her most things that has happened to him, I didn't really feel as though we needed a half a book explaining things we already knew. We knew Jimmy liked pineapple, we knew he clogged up half the toilets in the apartments and this embarrassed him. We knew he spent his time reading those tinned books. I felt the whole part with Jimmy I had nothing new introduced (except for Shadow) that we already knew or could assume.
This book disappointed me in many ways, it feels like a true `filler' and not a next installment at all. It repeats many things/scenes/ we have already seen. Donny is a great character and I am fully rooting for him, but some plot points seemed a bit too convenient (the emails! No one questioned him wakening people from stasis/not one person knowing what Thurman truly looked like) to believe in a world where I believed so much could happen.
Of course Hugh gives a just a taste with what is to come in DUST with the Epilogue and it promises everything and more.
I am a great Hugh Howey fan, I was obsessed with Wool and First shift and perhaps my expectations have exceeded the story. But I do believe that some parts of this story and plot were not as polished or as clever as his previous books, with Third Shift I felt it was very separate and disjointed compared to the other Shift books.
I keep hoping that someone will tell me I have missed something vital in these books, that I have overlooked one of Hughs famous `Ahhh!!' moments and then I will feel incredibly stupid and guilty for writing this review. But until then, these are MY honest thoughts on Third Shift :-).

Unexpected.
By Deb Robbins
I finished Third Shift a couple of days ago. As is usual for Hugh Howey's books, I finished it in a day. I then found I needed some time to think about it - which is not usual, at least for the Wool series.
There are five stars up there, for all kinds of great reasons. Once again, I was captivated by Hugh's storytelling. I love that I can see, hear, and feel the environments described, and the thoughts and feelings of the characters. There's no mistaking Jimmy's fear, confusion, and loneliness. Donald's pain and anger is crystal clear. A few more details of the planned future of the Silos are revealed. Discussion of pre-Silo events seems to be done - this book moves the story forward by a lot of years.
The book relates two parallel stories, in separate Silos. They do not intersect, although a couple of interesting details that affect both stories do come to light as Donald reviews old reports. Jimmy's story begins long before Donald is woken this time around, but both stories end in the same time frame. "End" in this case means reaching the conclusion of the prequel series. Although this was a bit different from the preceding books, I enjoyed both stories.
Still, I stumbled over a couple of things. Jimmy seems more composed and intelligent here than the man that Juliette found. I concluded that difference comes from hearing his thoughts in this story, versus his voice in Juliette's story. His communication skills are sorely lacking. But his survival, without serious illness or injury, is not much short of a miracle, considering the number of elapsed years.
Donald - we're done with "poor Donald" - has a long list of reasons to be very annoyed. He finds betrayal at every turn, and has no one to talk to about any of it. He's just as alone as Jimmy. But I found a couple of his actions to be jarring - a very sharp turn away from his nature. Most unexpected behavior, not well suited to his character.
As I see it, this book is a sort of interlude in the series, bringing the story back to Silo 18. All roads lead to Juliette from here. My favorite part is the epilogue. A quick sketch with few words draws a picture of two very angry people who do not know how much alike they are, or that they've chosen the same road.
I'm very much looking forward to Dust.
