Um, OK...well...let's suppose we're in a much taller building...and...they've stopped struggling for a bit.

I guess we'd just start anywhere really.

So you drag the pregnant, suicidal girl from the canal at no small risk to your own personal well-being, yeah? A simple ‘thanks’ might be nice, right? But instead you find that she’s actually pissed at you. Well, it’s the sort of thing that can fairly upset the rhythm of your day – y’know, your routine?

Yes, routine is important to Miles. Reacting against his hippy upbringing he has lived a life devoted to conformity, his fear of risk-taking preventing him from growing emotionally.

Surprisingly, he has a son – he’s not entirely sure how this happened either – who he takes to the local fast food restaurants with the other weekend fathers.

Desperate to pass on some sort of working philosophy to his child, Miles is faced with a dilemma. He wants him to follow the rules but this has brought him no luck in his own life. It seems that no one wants to take him seriously, not least his ex, the whimsical and capricious Sonia who takes life and love as she finds it.

That is until he discovers the pregnant girl – y’know, the ungrateful suicidal one? Right. Well, despite the initial ingratitude it seems that someone is actually, finally, listening to Miles.

It’s just that, well, the girl’s interpretation of what he says is rather different to what he actually means. Soon Miles realizes that he has created a monster. A monster for which he feels responsible.

Their common journey will see Miles revisit his past, coming face to face with a secret which could either undermine his entire identity or give him the courage to, finally, be himself.

A great read from Ireland

I read the Kindle version of Slips, Trips & Falls on my iPod (not iPad). Reading on an iPod is like reading the warning label on cigarette packs. In spite of this reading distraction, I found Foran’s book entertaining. His keen observation of modern culture and his sophisticated humor weaves together a story that is so ridiculously funny that it could be true. This is the story of Miles, a recent divorcee with a small son. Miles’s life is controlled and orderly until he meets a mysterious woman in a strange way who is totally opposite of him. This encounter sets off a series of events that will keep you turning pages until the end. M.J. Foran is a good writer and “Slips, Trips & Falls” is a book I will buy when it appears in the print edition.

Life, love and loss - Irish style!

Martin Foran is a writer of deftly-woven tales for these uncertain times. His take on modern day life in his debut novel 'Slips, Trips and Falls' can make the reader wince with recognition. While the themes of love and loss are universal and timeless, they strike a particular resonance in the early part of the 21st century as 'Everyman' struggles to find his place in the grand scheme of things, in this newly re-ordered world.

If you like novels that make you think, that illuminate the world around you and what's inside your heart, then Slips, Trips and Falls is for you.

This is an assured debut from the Irish writer. I look forward to his next novel with some anticipation.

a really enjoyable read

Slips Trips and Falls is a fine, and frequently hilarious, debut by the author, m.j. foran. It has all the qualities I look for in a good story - a compelling storyline, believable characters that I felt I knew intimately just a few chapters in, along with a wonderful zippy pace to proceedings. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys 'new' writing that challenges the status quo (both in terms of literature and society), as Foran's distinct and unique voice does here

About the Author

Robert L. Heath, professor emeritus of communication at the University of Houston, is an internationally recognized authority on public relations, crisis communication, issues management, risk communication, and business-to-business communication. He has published many award-winning books, including The SAGE Handbook of Public Relations (2010), Handbook of Risk and Crisis Communication (2009), Strategic Issues Management (2nd ed., 2009), Rhetorical and Critical Approaches to Public Relations II (2009), and Terrorism: Communication and Rhetorical Perspectives (2008).

Heath has 3 decades' experience in corporate communication and positioning research. He has conducted research on risks related to various hazards, including those associated with chemical manufacturing and community right-to-know―key themes in community relations. In addition, he has published more than 100 chapters and articles and serves on the editorial and reviewer panels of several premier academic journals. He has received many honors from public relations professionals and academic associations and has lectured nationally and internationally on a wide array of topics.

Michael J. Palenchar is an assistant professor in public relations at The University of Tennessee’s School of Advertising and Public Relations, College of Communication and Information (Ph. D., University of Florida; M.A., University of Houston). Research interests include risk communication and issues management related to manufacturing, community relations and community awareness of emergency response protocols and manufacturing risks, community right to know issues, crisis communication, front groups and general public relations. He has more than a decade of professional experience working in corporate, non-profit and agency, as well as a risk communication and issues management research consultant for clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to local government agencies to nongovernmental agencies. His research has been published in the Journal of Public Relations Research, Public Relations Review, Public Relations Journal, Environmental Communication and Communication Research Reports. He has five book chapters on risk, terrorism and professional ethics and more than 40 regional, national or international communication conference papers, winning 12 national or international top paper awards. With co-author Robert L. Heath in 2000 and Kathy Fitzpatrick in 2007, he won the Pride Award from the Public Relations Division, National Communication Association, for top published article in the field of public relations. He is an active member of AEJMC, NCA, PRSA, and ICA.

Heavily academic

I ordered this book for a graduate-level course in issues management and crisis communication. Since Robert Heath is a well known scholar in issues management, my students get the benefit of his considerable knowledge and his authoritative review of the scholarship of practitioners and other academics. However the writing is not inviting and is often tedious. It is quite redundant at times and must be reorganized for coherent lectures or discussions. Palenchar adds a lot to the book, with pithy descriptions, such as his definition for crisis as "risk manifested." His sections are much easier to read and better organized. Unless Heath gets a good editor, I probably will have to use a different book next time. It will probably be one that relies heavily on Heath's scholarship but is more clearly written. I also would like to see more on global issues and international organizations.

I purchased this book for a graduate course. I found the content to be very convoluted and repetitive. The text focuses more on theories and studies as opposed to practical application. On the upside, it did arrive very quickly!

Good but disappointing

I'll start with the harsh part. Cloud Atlas lies in its title. It is not a novel, it is a collection of thematically linked short stories. The paper thin gimmicks that hold them together (like shared birthmarks) do not form themselves into a unifying plot. This is the great disappointment of the book: stories so diverse, so rich, we expect that, when we find the connection, we will be blown away: it will reveal an intricate craftsmanship, a fully formed underwater plot that we can only understand backward at the moment six journeys converge on the same iceberg.

That's the hope. That it doesn't happen, that there IS no unifying plot, is the disappointment. It is six good-to-great short stories. Mitchell is overflowing with talent. If it had been presented as six enfolded, but never crossing, stories, had I never built that expectation, maybe I would look at it more kindly. Then again, without that expectation of SOMETHING to be followed, I would have skipped to the next short story as soon as one flagged, and most of them did at some point.

Back to the writing: Mitchell is sometimes brilliant. The voices he uses are so unique but so strong and flawlessly used, it almost feels like he;s showing off. There is some great stuff here. He has an incredible feel for pacing and tension; everything is Shakespearean in the size of the stakes. Cloud Atlas is also brilliantly imaginative. A million stories could be inspired in the minds of readers. In the end it puts me to mind of Infinite Jest, of some Vonnegut, or of Lost (the TV show): the storytelling is good, but not enough to forgive the lack of synthesis of the storylines. Of a PLAN behind it all.

I would definitely read more Mitchell.

This is a brilliantly executed novel

This is a brilliantly executed novel, one story transcending 500 years and the various reincarnations each character undergoes through the centuries. David Mitchell moves the reader from the 19th century well into the 24th century, including cultural, language, and post apocalyptic Hawai'i Island. In these future lives he explores the written language changes, and includes the evolution of English (Hawaiian) Pidgin.

As much as I enjoyed the book, his writing style, cutting off a storyline mid sentence when moving to the next life, is jarring and took me a while to get used to.

In my top five books of all time

One of the best books I have read--ever. And I'm over sixty, with a lifetime of reading behind me.
We don't need another detailed review of a book that came out more than a decade ago. Let me just add my voice to what should be dozens or hundreds of admiring reviews urging you to read this innovative work.
The "experimental" nature of the storytelling and narrative shape is still unusual. It's a long book, a slow read, but always interesting. Savor it, read it as slowly as feels comfortable. But don't miss it. It's a classic.

About the Author
Karla Neal received two degrees in mathematics from Louisiana State University and has been an instructor in the department of Mathematics for 31 years. During that time, she has served as the coordinator for College Trigonometry for more than 15 years. She has received three campus-wide teaching awards, and has served as a faculty advisor for several Christian campus organizations. Karla is an avid fan of the LSU Tigers. When she is not on campus, she is very active in her church, Healing Place Church in Baton Rouge, and can often be found on the golf course. At home, there are two dogs, Winston and Josie, waiting patiently.

R. David Gustafson is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Rock Valley College in Illinois and has also taught extensively at Rockford College and Beloit College. He is coauthor of several best-selling mathematics textbooks, including Gustafson/Frisk/Hughes' COLLEGE ALGEBRA, Gustafson/Karr/Massey's BEGINNING ALGEBRA, INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA, BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA, BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA: A COMBINED APPROACH, and the Tussy/Gustafson and Tussy/Gustafson/Koenig developmental mathematics series. His numerous professional honors include Rock Valley Teacher of the Year and Rockford's Outstanding Educator of the Year. He has been very active in AMATYC as a Midwest Vice-president and has been President of IMACC, AMATYC's Illinois affiliate. He earned a Master of Arts from Rockford College in Illinois, as well as a Master of Science from Northern Illinois University.

About the Author
Byron Wright is owner of BTW Technology Solutions, which provides Exchange Server and Office 365 implementation and migration services. Mr. Wright is a Microsoft MVP for Exchange server since 2012. He has a broad range of knowledge about Microsoft operating systems, Active Directory, networking, security, and cloud services. As a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT), Mr. Wright provides practical advice and exam relevant content to a wide variety of organizations. He has authored and co-authored a number of books for Cengage Learning on Windows Server 2003, Exchange Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. He also occasionally teaches information systems course for the Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba.

Leon Plesniarski is a Senior Solutions Architect who has been building with Microsoft products since 1984. Mr. Plesniarski's formal training was in Computer and Electrical Engineering, but he has since applied his skills primarily in computer networking. He has worked as a network administrator and technical instructor. He currently works as a consultant for Broadview Networks to analyze client requirements and provide practical solutions for their needs. In recent years Mr. Plesniarski has focused on Microsoft cloud services, such as Windows Azure, Office 365, and Microsoft Intune. Mr. Plesniarski leverages his teaching skills and experience as a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) to create learning materials that are technically accurate and easy to understand. Great Windows 7 Manual for Most People

This is a review of Windows 7: The Missing Manual by Daivd Pogue. The book is written in Pogue's clear, easy-to-read, and entertaining style. Through it all, he maintains his sense of humor. It covers most everyone from the most basic beginner to the the advanced super user, although the most sophisticated users won't need much from this book. But even for them, it includes some handy pointers and reference material.

It provides a complete Windows 7 manual, with everything from how to install (Appendix A), to Windows basics (using Windows, file management and search, and setting your desktop) to finding and installing programs, to connecting to and using the Internet, to advanced features like joining a domain and VPN. And it covers everything else in between.

New features like Libraries and Jump Lists are covered nicely. He even describes the Library problems where you can't add a network location to a Library without making that folder available off-line. He correctly points out that this copies that entire folder onto the local hard drive, so you probably don't want to do this.

I especially liked that when features were missing from a particular version of Windows 7, Pogue points that out. He also points out when a feature is available only on certain versions. For example, Aero is not available in Windows 7 Starter Edition, and he points that out when talking about Aero.

The book provides special help for people transitioning from XP and Vista. When he can, Pogue compares things to the way they used to be in XP and/or Vista. For example, he explains how the Start menu and taskbar have changed from both earlier versions.

He also offers handy sidebars with tips and other related information throughout the book. For example, in the section that teaches you about faxing, he has a sidebar on how to create your own fax cover page.

One of my favorite features of the book are the extraordinarily useful keyboard shortcuts. He provides shortcuts for every situation that has one. In addition, he provides a full keyboard reference in Appendix D.

This is truly the Missing Manual for Windows 7. It is not, however, a reference manual. It's designed to be read like a book. And it's a really good book.

Windows 7: The Missing Manual

As a professional in the ever growing technical field i'm often asked "How can i keep up with technology?" And often times the answer is very blunt, "you really can't." With the release of Windows 7, I've been slowing promoting it to all of my clients, customers, co-workers and peers, but often i'm faced with the words "I don't have time to learn it."

I was graciously given the opportunity by O'reilly to review Windows 7: The Missing Manual. Most of the time while reading a book explaining anything technology, I become bored. It seems that often it is geared to the 'I'm Just learning about technology' individuals. After reading Windows 7: The Missing Manual, I was impressed to say the least. If I were to sum up Windows 7: The Missing Manual in a sentence i'd have to say, This book is one of the best instructive tutorial books I have ever read for any computer related product.

With their down to earth, yet at some points witty, instructive procedures, it was not only painless to read, but enjoyable. They tackle anything from switching screens, to folder options, to Taskbars. You name it, this book has touch based on it. To everyone that wants to start tackling Windows 7, whether computer savvy or not, I wouldn't only suggest to read this, I would highly recommend.

So, to the People of O'reilly, thank you for finally making a book to help, not only, the advanced users, but also the lesser of the computer savvy.

Not very helpful if you want to accomplish a task

I gave this book three stars because the back cover says "Answers found here!" and I didn't find many answers.

I think this book should identify itself as either a reference manual or a user guide. It kinda looks like both, but actually is not either and I think that makes is less usable. It's also not properly organized/cross-referenced/indexed. It seems the book was not targeted for specific audience types, which is problematic. For example, to add a Win7 computer to an existing network of non-Win7 OSs (as in file and print sharing), you need to open the networking panel and change "homegroup" to "workgroup." You will not find this task/concept in this book, well, you can find information in several places that talk around the subject, but nothing that simply tells you that is what you need to do. The back cover lists the explanation of networking as a main feature of the book, but I had to google to figure this out, so I think this book is "missing" basic "answers."
