Good but disappointing

I'll start with the harsh part. Cloud Atlas lies in its title. It is not a novel, it is a collection of thematically linked short stories. The paper thin gimmicks that hold them together (like shared birthmarks) do not form themselves into a unifying plot. This is the great disappointment of the book: stories so diverse, so rich, we expect that, when we find the connection, we will be blown away: it will reveal an intricate craftsmanship, a fully formed underwater plot that we can only understand backward at the moment six journeys converge on the same iceberg.
That's the hope. That it doesn't happen, that there IS no unifying plot, is the disappointment. It is six good-to-great short stories. Mitchell is overflowing with talent. If it had been presented as six enfolded, but never crossing, stories, had I never built that expectation, maybe I would look at it more kindly. Then again, without that expectation of SOMETHING to be followed, I would have skipped to the next short story as soon as one flagged, and most of them did at some point.
Back to the writing: Mitchell is sometimes brilliant. The voices he uses are so unique but so strong and flawlessly used, it almost feels like he;s showing off. There is some great stuff here. He has an incredible feel for pacing and tension; everything is Shakespearean in the size of the stakes. Cloud Atlas is also brilliantly imaginative. A million stories could be inspired in the minds of readers. In the end it puts me to mind of Infinite Jest, of some Vonnegut, or of Lost (the TV show): the storytelling is good, but not enough to forgive the lack of synthesis of the storylines. Of a PLAN behind it all.
I would definitely read more Mitchell.

This is a brilliantly executed novel

This is a brilliantly executed novel, one story transcending 500 years and the various reincarnations each character undergoes through the centuries. David Mitchell moves the reader from the 19th century well into the 24th century, including cultural, language, and post apocalyptic Hawai'i Island. In these future lives he explores the written language changes, and includes the evolution of English (Hawaiian) Pidgin.
As much as I enjoyed the book, his writing style, cutting off a storyline mid sentence when moving to the next life, is jarring and took me a while to get used to.

In my top five books of all time

One of the best books I have read--ever. And I'm over sixty, with a lifetime of reading behind me.
We don't need another detailed review of a book that came out more than a decade ago. Let me just add my voice to what should be dozens or hundreds of admiring reviews urging you to read this innovative work.
The "experimental" nature of the storytelling and narrative shape is still unusual. It's a long book, a slow read, but always interesting. Savor it, read it as slowly as feels comfortable. But don't miss it. It's a classic.
