Best training method for scent discrimination dogs

This book is the most helpful, clear & successful model for training a trailing dog to follow a specific scent reliably and enthusiastically. Filled with great photographs, How to Train a Police Bloodhound and Scent Discrimination Patrol Dog is beautifully written, clear to follow and encouraging for veteran and novice handlers. Kevin Kocher, the principal developer of this training method (with his wife, Robin, a trailing handler and sheriff's office detective), spent three and a half days with my search and rescue team in St. Louis recently. It revolutionized our team training. By the end of the weekend, our dogs (mine a thirteen month old German Shepherd puppy) were scenting a person off a fallen "victim," alerting us to a child taken away in a car, telling us when a trail ended at water's edge, leading us to a specific store in a mall, and following 19 hour old, rained-on trails on city streets, parking lots and shopping malls. Our dogs gained skills, confidence and zeal. We were "dogged" all weekend by police K-9 unit cruisers who wanted to see the action. They got an eye-full!

Kocher's 20 years of training 100 bloodhounds, his extraordinary ability to read dogs, years of training handlers (across the US and in Europe, principally in Germany and Austria), and decades of personal experience in law enforcement trailing, have combined to produce a concise, clear and comprehensive training model. This method of trailing training creates enthusiastic trailers by engaging prey drive. It creates skilled trackers by exposing dogs to every real life situation imaginable. Kocher goes for long-term training for fast, accurate starts and a solid training foundation.

The key concept is INTENSITY. Kocher's term "an intensity" is his way of engaging the dog's natural prey drive to reinforce the trailing foundational training. Follow up every training module with "an intensity:" the "victim"/trail-layer plays with the dog, excites it with the dog's favorite toy and runs away to a close-by hiding place, out of the dog's sight. The minute the victim is hidden, the handler releases the dog with for a quick find and everybody whoops and hollers and praises the dog, which gets to play with the toy. Kocher's "intensities" are linked to everything - if you give the dog this quick, solid, flawless success right after something hard (an aged trail, confusing scent pools, highly contaminated starting areas) the success of the Intensity will relate back to the new learning. The next time the dog encounters the new situation, it will enter it with more confidence. Hundreds of repetitions of "throwing a party" for the dog creates enormous joy and drive for work.

How to Train a Police Bloodhound contains 77 short chapters in 338 pages, covering hundreds of practical aspects of training. The Kochers include huge numbers of real-life training suggestions. But Kevin Kocher's clarity shines through this book. After decades of training dogs, he emphasizes simplicity. Dog training is the most natural thing in the world. It's simple. Look to the dog's own instincts and go with those. What's your dog's natural instinct to respond to finding a victim? ...to sit? ...to jump up? ...to bark? Then that's your alert. Honor the dog. Be honorable and thorough in your training methods, your record keeping, your accountability. Keep it simple.

It doesn't get better than this. Get the book. Get copies for every tracking trainer, every K-9 unit trainer you know. Then do it. This is the real deal.

Review of "How to Train a Police Bloodhound..." by Kocher

Periodically, history is punctuated by events that change the course of history for all time that follows. The release of "How to Train a Police Bloodhound and Scent Discriminating Patrol Dog: The Kocher Method" by Kevin and Robin Monroe Kocher is one such point in time--operational mantrailing will be forever changed. The operational mantrailing community has been struggling for years to break from "old school" training techniques of sport tracking for which texts are plentiful but describe techniques and expectations that are wholly inadequate for the operational handler. Although various essays and short articles on more contemporary techniques are available on the World Wide Web, these provide incomplete snapshots. The Kocher's book is the first textbook aimed at the operational patrol and search and rescue (SAR) handler that provides a comprehensive training program with techniques, performance expectations, and solutions to training difficulties.

The "intensity trail" is the foundation principle of Kocher Method. The intensity trail is a short, high energy, motivational trail well within the performance capabilities of the dog/handler team. It is used early in the training program to get the team moving forward down trail with substantial momentum. As training progresses to more advanced challenging trails, an intensity trail follows immediately after the initial reward. By chaining a motivational trail to the difficult one, the dog generalizes to the entire event thereby building confidence in performing in the difficult environment and completing the challenging exercise. Emphasis of the Kocher Method is placed on short challenging "component" training and deemphasizes (without excluding) long endurance trails. These, of course, need to be interlaced in any comprehensive training program but are not the focus as they are for many handlers today. Although the book emphasizes use of a bloodhound, the technique is appropriate for any dog suitable for the mantrailing discipline.

The reader should appreciate that this book is based on the extensive, highly successful careers of the author's in handling mantrailing bloodhounds for law enforcement agencies. Anecdotes from actual experiential cases of the authors and their fellow colleagues are included throughout the book as evidence for the need to train different components. As a result, the Kocher Method has been honed and refined for nearly 20 years!

This textbook is not for the novice handler that trains alone or does not have experience handling a mantrailing dog unless he/she has access to an experienced mantrailing handler. Although the book begins with a few short chapters on selecting an appropriate dog, equipment, and basic skills, these are insufficient in and of themselves as your only source of material. In addition, the authors reprint an article available for about 10 years on the web pertaining to reading body behavior of a mantrailing dog. However, without experience on the end of a lead behind a dog, it may be difficult to appreciate this information. Likewise, understanding how your dog will respond to different components in trailing, requires at least intermediate level experience training a mantrailing dog. This is not to say that a novice handler should avoid this book--quite the contrary--this book will help the novice handler appreciate the training challenge before them and help guide planning their foundation training. One who is truly interested in implementing the Kocher Method should seek to attend a training seminar with instructors from the National Bloodhound Training Institute to better understand how to incorporate this Method into their own training program.

The book, 338 pages in length, is organized into eight parts comprised of a total of 77 chapters. Each chapter is very short and focuses on a specific consideration or training situation. The text is laced with hundreds of high quality black and white photographs that support the text. Case law is referenced throughout as it guides training and defines expected outcomes.

This book is a must for any serious mantrailing handler's library. As I noted at the beginning of this review, this book will be the reference textbook for many years to come.

This is one of the most comprehensive books for tracking/trailing dogs. It is easy to understand and follow. His method is excellent and I did enjoy working with him. His expertise was invaluable to me and my dog. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in training tracking and trailing dogs.

Hold On Just A Little While Longer

This novel, Dreams That Won't Let Go by Stacy Hawkins Adams, is the final offering from Ms. Adams' Jubilant Soul trilogy. While this book does stand alone, it is with great pleasure that I am happy to have read installment one, The Someday List. Interestingly enough, without having read installment two of the series, Worth A Thousand Words, I was able to pick right back up with the ongoings of the Burns family. In Dreams That Won't Let Go, the Burns clan grapples with issues that each has been holding within. Grateful to the grandparents who raised them, the three Burns children, Reuben, Indigo and Yasmin, can not help but to wonder if somehow their dreams have been deferred.

As Reuben, Indigo and Yasmin face their fears, they hope to one day realize their dreams, and to have the kind of family they each long for. After a more recent upheaval, and with the aid of the supporting characters, Peyton, Reuben's wife, and Max, Indigo's fiancee', as well as Pastor Taylor, the Burns family struggles to overcome pain and hurt that has festered for years.

I enjoyed reading this selection. The characters are well-developed, and believable. I recommend this selection to parents afraid to let go and let God and any reader that enjoys inspirational selections.

Family Issues

Dreams That Won't Let Go by Stacy Hawkins Adams is a story about the Burns family. Indigo Burns is newly engaged and so excited for this next journey in life. She really needs her family to be there for her, mainly her mother, but that all changes when her brother, Rueben, comes back home to Jubliant, Texas. Rueben has been away from home for years, with no explanation of why he never came back. Now that he has returned all of the family's attention turns to him and away from Indigo and her younger sister, Yasmin.

Rueben is returning for healing. But cannot seem to start the process because of the bitterness and betrayal that his sisters feel towards him. It takes trials and hard times for the Burns family to come together. Will they ever be able to mend their relationship? Will this family be a loving unit once again?

Adams is an amazing writer, I never just got into the book. There was no real climax in the story. I did enjoy the message of family sticking by each other and communicating even through the bad times. If you are a fan of Adams, I think you will enjoy. It was just not a favorite of mine.

Prodigal Son

Dreams That Won't Let Go is the third installment in the Jubilant Soul series written by Stacy Hawkins Adams. Lessons of fear of failure, family overshadowing, forgiveness and letting go can be found among the pages and through the characters. When Reuben Burns decides to uproot his wife, Peyton, and his son, Charles David, from Seattle no one expected all the changes that would come with his return to Jubilant, Texas. His sisters, Indigo and Yasmin, are less than welcoming to him. They want answers from Reuben, but neither of them is willing to ask him the questions. And since Reuben was not talking either, a generous amount of uncertainty grew among them.

Upon his return to the place he grew up, Reuben did not expect his parents to dote on him so much that they are almost forgetful of the other important people in their lives. Even though, Indigo tried to keep her thoughts on planning her wedding, her mind stayed on her parents doting on Reuben. It is not until Yasmin, the baby of the family, decides she is grown enough to make her own choices that the eyes of everyone are slowly opened. Will the Burnses be able to move past the hurt and the pain creating a riff?

Even though I did not read the first two offerings in the Jubilant Soul series, I did not feel as though I was missing anything. The emotions of the characters are relatable and believable. However, the story fell a little flat in the climax area. Adams did a great job of building suspense around what was going on with Reuben and the real reason behind him leaving and returning home. However, when the reason is revealed I had an "oh is that all?" reaction. I recommend Dreams That Won't Let Go to readers of Christian fiction, Stacy Hawkins Adams works, and to those wanting to see what can happen when instructions, actions or information are misinterpreted.

Sandy Loyd is a Western girl through and through. Born and raised in Salt Lake City, she's worked and lived in some fabulous places in the US, including South Florida. She now resides in Kentucky and writes full time. As much as she loves her current hometown, she misses the mountains and has to go back to her roots to get her mountain fix at least once a year. Cozy Mystery

If you're looking for a cozy mystery to curl up in front of the fire with, you found it.

Deadly Misconceptions drops you into the action on the first page and is a real page turner. The dialogue between the characters felt natural and was fun to read. So I really enjoyed the book.

Loved the mystery of this one a bit more than the romance surprisingly!!! It was that good!!!

This book was easily liked from the beginning. Humorous at times with Lucy's personality but mostly suspense with a good twist. I don't understand how some readers claim the murderer was predictable and easily guessed when for one, they didn't leave any hints or cause suspicion. The culprit never acted out of character other than minor jealousy which was excusable given the circumstances. There was nothing that stood out that could have raised suspicion that they were the murderer or involved with them. Id personally call it more of a wild guess that ended up being correct because there was nothing to back up that claim in knowing who was behind it all until the end. It jumped from one suspect to the next and I feel Sandy is discredited as a good author when people claim the mystery was "easily guessed" when there is a lot of thought and effort that goes into these books. Not everyone can write a decent book especially one that involves mystery or has a vast knowledge of different subjects and careers but Sandy is able to work with almost anything she sets her heart on writing. And it shows through this book as well from the smallest details to the main plot everything falls into place. Another good twist and the romance between Lucy and Jack was well done but in this book I think the spotlight was on the mystery. Another good one by Sandy!!!

Agreeable reading. Enough action to keep one interested throughout the plot. Even the romance was believable, and sure felt real enough to relate. Contemporary setting, 21st century with all it's drama, peer pressure in teens, mistakes of the "system" emphasized and elaborated on. Good end.

Another addition to the recent spate of single-subject cookbooks, this volume takes the trend to a monomaniacal extreme. Offering 60 variations of pies-fruit-filled, cream, custard, chiffon or "candy"-this compilation focuses entirely on dessert; no savory pies or tarts confuse its mission. But the recipes are easy to follow and generally appealing: a Maple Nutmeg Custard Pie is decadently sweet and eggy, and an old-fashioned Peach Pie tastes like the essence of summer. Moreover, it's comforting to find recipes for certain heirloom pies, like the Chess and the Tyler, named for John Tyler, the 10th president of the United States. This cookbook has its tics, however. Only some of the pies are photographed, leaving the appearance of the Chocolate Tweed Pie and the Date Bar Pie entirely up to the reader's imagination. The recipe for Cranberry Mincemeat Pie gives no instructions on how to prepare mincemeat. And the author tends to overexplain the obvious, reminding his audience that before buying a large rolling pin, one should make sure one's "work area allows... ample room to maneuver," and that pie pans are also called pie plates and pie dishes. This is information that the true pie-lover surely already knows.

I found this cookbook full of delicious recipes as well as excellent basic tips for young cooks. Unfortunately, there were few pictures and no step by step pictures of how to roll out a piecrust, etc.

All that matters is Pie ...

If there is one thing that I would have with me, besides water, on a deserted island... It would be pie. The warm, flaky crusts; the cooling, aromatic fruits; the flavors of the crust and the flowing juices... I carry this book with me everywhere. That is how much I LOVE pie.

In this book you will find great instruction. Mr. Carrol walks you step by step into creating the perfect crust, to suit you, the perfect filling, again to suit you and lastly the perfect topping, all for you. You will not be dissapointed. It is a book composed of Love.

This is a screen play, not a nonfictional document like the book of the same title by Edsel. Skip this for the one with meat by Edsel.

I was completely engrossed

This was a book club choice and I wasn't sure it was going to be more than the script for a movie, but I was pleasantly surprised to find page after page of history and intrigue about a subject I'd only known from sketchy news stories about stolen treasures.
It is well written, so totally enjoyable I bought three more copies to give as Christmas gifts. It covers a part of WWII that we seldom hear about and is fascinating.

The storyline made this book a good read. Did learn a few facts. If anyone does not like to read history that much or even someone who is a history buff, this book is basically for everyone. I don't like reading history books, but this one was pretty awesome
