The first print publication edited by Tavi Gevinson, the editor in chief of Rookie, the website for teenage girls Tavi Gevinson started her personal blog, Style Rookie (http://www.thestylerookie.com), in 2008, when she was eleven years old. It was a place where, from the confines of her bedroom in the suburbs, she could write about personal style and chronicle the development of her own. Within two years, the blog was averaging fifty thousand hits per day. Soon fashion designers were flying her around the world to attend and write about fashion shows, and to be a guest of honor at their parties. Soon Tavi's interests grew beyond fashion, into culture and art and, especially, feminism. In September 2011, when she was fifteen, she launched Rookie (http://rookiemag.com), a website for girls like her: teenagers who are interested in fashion and beauty but also in dissecting the culture around them through a uniquely teen-girl lens. Rookie broke one million page views within its first six days. Rookie Yearbook One collects articles, interviews, photo editorials, and illustrations from the highly praised and hugely popular online magazine.

Even if you are 56
By SuZee
If you are, like me, a 56 year old feminist, I just want you to know that you are NOT too old for this yearbook. It has great stuff--an interview with John Waters! David Sedaris! Wonderful pictures, lessons on how to bitchface, Lena Dunham, how to do mod eye make up, awesome stickers. Anna Faris has the best advice for surviving high school: Lay Low.
Oh, and lots of very bright and insightful writing by some powerful young women, women like us. No, we aren't teen age girls anymore but we will forever be trying to untangle the knot that was adolescence. Still tear up when hearing Adele's Someone Like You when you're alone in the car? Still secretly drawn to glitter? Still try on those platforms at TJ Maxx when no one is looking?
This book is for you.
And a word to the publishers, activate the "look inside" function--I think if people could see the table of contents they would get really interested.

Distasteful Content
By salty cat
I was very much looking forward to gifting these to my daughter for Christmas. She loves Tavi and all that she has offered online with her blog. My daughter considered her a role model, until reading through all three Rookie Yearbooks. She and I were very put off and flat out disappointed by the contents of these books. They are filled with masturbating tips, sexual how -tos, and other uncomfortable topics for young girls. There's even an article on how to fake sick to stay home from school. A great lesson on dishonesty.
I am not a prude by any means, but consider these books to be very distasteful. They should at least come with a warning for 16 and under. My daughter is a very mature teenager and knows a lot about life for someone her age. I understand that there are things you don't want to talk to your parents about, but when you are looking for inspiration and find instead talks of porn, blow jobs, and how to find your clit, you feel very let down. Very rarely do we restrict what she can watch or read, but if I had know ahead of time that these books were filled with such topics I would not have bought them.
Of course there is some good content, but it hardy makes up for the excessive forced teenage angst most of the articles contain. When I asked my daughter what she didn't like about the yearbooks she said they are all so angry and made her feel depressed. They are not uplifting, inspiring, or encouraging like she had hoped they would be. When I asked her what she liked about them she said she loved the few DIY's and famous people interviews.
At her request I will be returning all three so she can buy art supplies instead.
