Definitions, theorems, proofs, etc, are also clearly stated. Important results are nicely highlighted. Excellent review exercises are provided, with fill-in the blank and t/f type questions, as well as problems."

About the Author
Dennis G. Zill is professor of mathematics at Loyola Marymount University. His interests are in applied mathematics, special functions, and integral transforms. Dr. Zill received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics and his M.S. from Iowa State University in 1967 and 1964, respectively. He received his B.A. from St. Mary's in Winona, Minnesota, in 1962. Dr. Zill also is former chair of the Mathematics Department at Loyola Marymount University. He is the author or co-author of 13 mathematics texts.

Warren S. Wright received his M.A. in mathematics from the University of Southern California and is currently professor of mathematics at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Wright has previously coauthored two textbooks with Dennis Zill and has authored numerous solutions manuals to accompany Zill's texts.

Very comprehensive book

After many years away from formal math classes, it became necessary to remember what went on in the DE class. It was not feasible to sit in the classroom again, but luckily there are some good books available on Kindle. "Differential Equations with Boundary-Value Problems" gives excellent explanations and examples for the techniques required to write and solve DE problems. This book is particularly good because it includes more solutions steps in the examples than many textbooks. There are plenty of examples included in each topic. Enough so that it was probably the closest you can come to getting the information from sitting in class. Each chapter has lots of example problems, which cover a wide range of topics.

While there are example problems worked throughout the text as a means of explaining a process. There isn't enough information in the topics to be able to work all of the end of chapter problems. There are very few answers at the end of the book. A solutions manual seems to be available, but that will require additional expense.

Great ODE text. I haven't found a better one yet.

Best math book I've purchased to date. Theorems and formulae are apparent, being laid out nicely. A little wordy at times, but the explanations are always clear. I've utilized three other introductory ODE books (Farlow, Blanchard, Nagle) and Zill/Wright (this book) does it best.

My only qualm is the lack of a glossary. While new terminology is bolded, the definitions are often inferred from context. In my opinion, that's the best way to learn a new word most naturally, but I can definitely see the appeal to a glossary.

A solid introduction!

If you need techniques to solve lower level differential equations, I don't think you'll get a better textbook than this one. My school used this book over two semesters, where the first focused on basic ODEs and the second focused on systems of ODEs and elementary PDEs.

And this book is written with the engineer in mind. "Here is a technique, use this technique, master this technique, and you won't be lost in later courses where professors derive equations or manipulate them using techniques."

For the math student or the student curious about theory and "why," this is a poor choice, but that's not terribly bad. The idea in this book here is what I said above--get used to doing rote computational and meaningless exercises so when you study something more involved, you won't feel like you don't know how someone went from Step A to Step B. And if there's one thing this book excels at, it's a very *good* selection of examples to really make you play with all the various techniques you'll learn.

But the biggest problem with this book is motivation. If you want a technique or need to remind yourself how to do a technique, you have it. But why do you use the Laplace Transform? What's the purpose of a phase plane? This book relies on answering all the important questions with a sentence or two "here or there." Meaning you need to dig through the section to find it--a book should be very clear motivating a method. Most students at this point in time don't really appreciate the differences in a differential equation of the form P(x)y'' + Q(x)y' + R(x) = S(x), where P,Q,R,S are polynomials, or maybe polynomials of a specific form (giving Cauchy-Euler equations), etc. Yes, these are given their own unique sections. But the book doesn't present itself as to WHY we need a NEW method just because the form changed, like why the new method fails for a more general form or why the new method is easier than the old method (since the more general method should work on a simpler problem).

Instead, we just get "So, in the previous section, we had this one form and used this method. In this section, our form is a little more specific, so we can use a new technique. Here it is!"

It's just not motivating enough. But when what you need is practice and breadth, you'll get it. Especially good are the ways the phase portraits and numerical solutions are presented (many books present numerical algorithms in ugly notation not readily accessible to students, riddled with large summations and subscripts everywhere).

All in all, a good book, but it's a good book for what it is--an introduction to the computational aspect of higher math. You have to learn how to factor quadratics before you learn the theory of factoring polynomials in general. You need to compute DEs before you learn the theory of DEs.
