TWO TEENAGERS FIGHT TO SURVIVE IN AN AMERICA GONE DARK
When massive solar flares send an intense electromagnetic pulse to Earth, every electrical device is fried instantly. The modern world that sixteen-year-old Mitch Henley has always known comes crashing down. Anarchy, looting and chaos explode all around him. Stranded in New Orleans, Mitch escapes into the Mississippi backwoods he knows so well, hoping to stay alive using the survival and hunting skills he learned from his game-warden father.
Alone and on foot, Mitch sets out to make his way back to the family farm and his younger sister. Not knowing if his parents are dead or alive, nothing else matters . . . until he meets April Gibbs along the way. Smart, beautiful, lethal and alone, she is also making a treacherous trek to find her lost family. They decide to travel together for safety, but neither can begin to imagine the danger that awaits them in the woods.
Set in the same anarchy-and-desperation-reigned world of the author’s dystopian thriller: The Pulse, The Darkness After a frightening look at how fragile our technologically dependent lifestyle really is.

From the Author
The Darkness After is a post-Apocalyptic novel set in the same, anarchy-ruled world of my first novel, The Pulse. Most of the action takes place in the backwoods of south Mississippi, after the main characters make their way out of a blacked-out New Orleans. After the publication of The Pulse in 2012, I began this parallel story with a different set of characters facing the same chaos and danger caused by the complete shutdown of the power, communication and transportation grid in North America. Mitch and April, the two main characters here, are both in their late teens, and both have strong motivation to get where they're going and unique skills to help them survive against staggering odds. Mitch is a hunter, obsessed with the woods in the same way that I was when I was his age, escaping school and confinement at every opportunity to spend time in the wild. April is a city girl, but a tough one who's been on her own since losing her parents. No one would guess from looking at her, but she's also deadly at hand-to-hand combat, having mastered the techniques of Kenpo taught to her by her Dad over many years before his passing. As a team, Mitch and April are unstoppable in their quest to get to the ones depending on them for survival.

Kept my adult prepper interest
By JMDinGa
I must disagree with the one-star review by kczar that said this book might appeal only to a 12-year old. I'm a 65 year-old prepper who has lots of weapons and preps, and who has read extensively in this genre, including "The Pulse" that Scott published last year. And I found the book to not only be well written with very few spelling and grammar errors, but also a credible story. It's not out of the realm of reason that a 16 year-old boy who lives in a very rural setting, whose father is a game warden, and who has had extensive hunting experience for his age, has the knowledge and maturity to act as he did in the story. Scott avoids unnecessary sensationalism that most authors would have stooped to in a TEOTWAWKI story centered around teens. Yes, he did also avoid foul language since this book was probably aimed at a younger audience; but it did not detract from the story at all. I've read some SHTF books laced with expletives and heavy action that were milk-toast compared to the writing in "The Darkness After". There is plenty of action, but it all evolves in a natural manner for the circumstances.
I taught school for 32 years, and I found these young people's actions believable. The story captivated my interest throughout. And to my surprise, I did pick up one or two new tips for prepping - that's rare these days, as there isn't much I have not already thought about and prepared for. The story sequenced well, and the ending was appropriate for a book that will clearly have a sequel. Anyone who has read as much as I have in this genre, knows that there is a plethora of really poor writers out there who have no business publishing at all (see my other reviews that have low scores). When you come across someone who writes as well as Scott B. Williams, you need to keep that in mind. Good work, Scott. I applaud you for reaching out to teen readers with a book that will probably be eye-opening for many who read it; and probably for lots of adults too. Keep the stories coming - even adult preppers enjoy them. JMD

Great YA Story
By LJ
Even though I place this story in the YA catagory, I enjoyed the read very much. Two young teenagers find themselves trying to get home to their loved ones after the grid goes down. Mitch is in New Orleans heading back to Mississippi and his family farm, April on the road to Hattiesburg to be with her young daughter and family.
Mitch and April's characters are well developed, with portrayals of strengths and weaknesses. Both of them draw strength from the other in various ways, learning to trust and adapt in a world cast into chaos. Each of them are forced to take violent measures when their lives are interrupted by those who prey on the weak. Armed with the skills taught by their father's, Mitch and April team up and move toward their destination, but not without detours.
One would think, by reading the description of the story, this book is about a love story. It's not...it's about two people trying to survive and get home. It does have some teenage 'feelings' presented, but nothing indepth to take away from the actual premise of the story line. Hey, it's what teenagers do, and I thought the author portrayed that part of character very well without getting carried away.
This story flows quite well, with interesting tidbits of information about nature, forests and rivers. Editing was good, with only a few missing words, or where words shouldn't be...but that may have been my Kindle format. Overall, I don't regret purchasing this book, albeit, a bit over-priced. Nevertheless, when I enjoy a good read, and feel satisfied at the end, (actually, I didn't want it to end), then it becomes priceless.
The ending is left open for a possible sequel. If there is, I'll read it.

Good read, but a rushed and unsatisfying ending
By Brian J
I enjoyed this book well enough to read it straight through in one 3.5 hour sitting. The description of the region was accurate, the characters believable, and the narrative held my attention. But some of the descriptions were excessively long winded, the last few pages felt very rushed, and the ending was totally unsatisfying after spending over 280 pages watching a relationship develop.
Although I feel these issues detracted from the book they were not entirely unexpected, as I had the same observations regarding The Pulse. I did prefer this book to The Pulse, as it seems that Williams is improving as an author. I just hope that he provides a more satisfying conclusion when he writes the inevitable sequels.
