About the Author
Thornton Waldo Burgess (January 14, 1874 – June 5, 1965) was a conservationist and author of children's stories. Burgess loved the beauty of nature and its living creatures so much that he wrote about them for 50 years in books and his newspaper column, Bedtime Stories. He was sometimes known as the Bedtime Story-Man. By the time he retired, he had written more than 170 books and 15,000 stories for the daily newspaper column.

Kindle version has color illustrations.

The kindle version of this book seems to have reproductions of the original illustrations - in color. We really enjoy the addition of these... It really adds to the written descriptions of the birds. Not all birds in the book have a corresponding illustration - but most of them do.
As far as the writing and content, we loved it. My son (just turned 6) had developed an interest in birds, so when I saw this book - I thought it would be a great way to learn more about them, get our nightly reading in, and begin the switch to some chapter books. This book worked great for all three of those purposes. I also love the values/character the book blends in. It had made us big Burgess fans... We are on to the Seashore book now. :)

This is one of the books recommended and I can see why

We are a homeschooling family and are just beginning Ambleside Online's Year 1 curriculum for my 6 year old son! This is one of the books recommended and I can see why...its a great one! We've only just started to delve into it but Im very pleased with it so far! It offers science but instead of the typical fact and figures, science is presented through story which we find far more engaging!
Like others have mentioned, this book is better digested in small spurts, rather than marathon sessions! In addition to that, the pictures in this book are black and white so if you're hoping for colored photos, you'll have to look else where! Despite this, Im pleased with this book!

Illustrations are totally missing!

Even though on the sample page online Burgess refers to the beautiful and accurate illustrations of birds - they are completely missing in this edition! It was hugely disappointing and reveals a lack of understanding about the purpose of the book in the first place. The book was intended to be an introduction to bird identification and lore for children. It is not a simple story book - not at all! Burgess' entertaining and excellent writing, of course, remains.... I have no argument with Burgess - it is simply that half his material was left out of this publication without any notation in the description of the book that the illustrations had been deleted.
