Jenna O’Conner is not human, nor is she considered the norm for the supernatural Other community. It’s important she hide her true nature from both humans and Others.

Right after moving to a new city, Jenna runs into trouble in the form of a deadly, mouthwatering man named Adam McPhee. He’s an alpha werewolf determined to do two things: figure out exactly what Jenna is and have her all to himself.

As if that weren’t enough for Jenna to deal with, a group of extremist Shifters who consider humans to be cattle and who think that factions of Others should stay within their own species—never to intermingle—come to town. Jenna has to find a way to shut them down, but in the process of trying to do that, she discovers things about herself that even she had never thought were possible.
Who said the wolf was what you had to worry about?

"If you likefunny paranormal romance with crazy but endearing characters, Big Bad Bite willbe for you."
- Swept Away By Romance
"I enjoyed thecrisp, fast paced writing style that flows smoothly through the story. Withinthe pages, humor, action, suspense, and romance all mix together for a laughout loud story that keeps you hooked to the very end. It's not completelylighthearted though. Some intriguing subplots balance well against the humoroussituations to reveal a serious side to the story... All in all, Big Bad Bite issteady and action packed with plenty of twists and turns that delighted me. Ienjoyed the light and dark aspect that is brought into play-they blend welltogether... Jessie Lane is definitely an author to watch for those who love zany, adventures, romantic PNR."

"Big Bad Bitewas one of those books that was hard to put down. There was action, mystery andplenty of heat. There were also more than a couple of tense moments along witheven a few tears. I love a book that keeps me on the edge of my seat and thisone definitely did that. The world building was also great. Just the way I likeit... familiar enough to make 'sense' yet unique enough to make it the authors'own."

Big Bad Bite - lots of fun, nice start to a new series
By Jess
Jenna is a shifter with a few extra abilities from her dear mom that make her very unique and forced her father to hide her away when she was growing up. She never met her dad, her uncle watched out for her until he up and disappeared years ago and another uncle helped her get on a local police force to land her first job. Now she's moved up to a new SWAT team and her life starts heading in a crazy direction. She was raised to believe that her life would be in danger if she didn't stay hidden from other shifters and as a result doesn't know hardly anything about their world and about her own wolf. So when her path crosses with the local alpha and she finds out that a demon is on her SWAT team, the world of Others just crashed into her life.

Jenna finds herself in the middle of a world that she doesn't know much about. She has an alpha, Adam, who took one sniff of her and gets all possessive and wants to be her mate. She meets family she never knew she had and is reunited family she hasn't seen in years. It was nice to get an understanding of the world through Jenna's eyes, as it was all new to her as well. Jenna and the local pack are trying to figure out why a foreign group of shifters have come to town to cause problems. This actually sets up a larger story arc that will continue into the next book. But for this book, it was all about Jenna learning about the world she was hidden from and finding her place in it.

The romance between Jenna and Adam certainly isn't front and center but it's a much bigger issue for Adam than Jenna originally realizes. When a male shifter finds his mate but can't claim her right away, things get dicey. Adam is a sweet guy and he tries so hard to curb his MINE! MINE! MINE! instincts, but if Jenna denies him for too long or denies him completely, he risks going feral and having to be killed. Luckily for all involved, Jenna wants Adam and her wolf just wants to rub up against him, so their romance does develop, at shifter-warp speed. But even in the short amount of time they're together, Adam proves himself to be genuine and Jenna can't help but fall for this guy, he is pretty irresistible.

The romance only takes up a small portion of the overall story as much time is devoted to the crazy, insane cast of supporting characters that are introduced. If you like off the wall, random banter and dialogue of insane (did I already say that?) proportions, then you'll love the characters you meet in Big Bad Bite. From Jenna's man whore SWAT team partner Kent, to two tiger shifter brothers (Gage and Alex) and their sexy Russian Grandma, who makes an unforgettable first appearance on page, to Jenna's Irish cursing, telekinesis using mom - it's mayhem no matter who's on page.

While I enjoyed the characters, the start of a larger, ongoing story arc, and watching Adam chase his would-be-mate around, one small thing that stood out is the story felt a little disjointed in places. There is a lot of detail described throughout, be it a building the group was going into, or a room they found themselves in. It only stood out to me in that it was, well boring. I just wanted to get back to dialogue and more action on page instead of reading about the detailed design and layout of a building's floor. This was in no way a huge thing, but it did interrupt the flow of the story a little bit.

Jenna was a lot of fun to read about. She doesn't really have a filter when it comes to thinking things and stopping herself from saying them out loud. She's snarky, sarcastic and a little bit crazy but she, along with this eclectic cast of characters, were entertaining and great to get to know. Going by how the events of this first book played out, it seems like it will be a series that is going be best read in order as the main action storyline is just heating up. I laughed a lot during Big Bad Bite and it's a very entertaining start to this new series.

Too Unrealistic - In Desperate Need of Knowledgeable Editing
By Karen Schwag
It should be noted my review is based only on the free sample available for download. It is not based on the entire book so please keep this in mind before you use this review to make a decision on whether or not to purchase this book. Had the book been free, I would have read it because it is a fast-paced, easy read. But even at $2.99 it didn't seem worth the price because the sample just contained too many factual errors. It you enjoy the very unrealistic Stephanie Plum books, you will probably enjoy this book.

SPOILER ALERT:

Although I understand the need for creative license, I do need the story to be at least somewhat based in reality. If a main character is a cop, a lawyer, a doctor, etc. I need to be able to accept this as a possibility. In the first pages of this story, I am expected to believe the lead female character is a very petite, very young (23) year old newly hired member of a SWAT team with five years of small town law enforcement experience. Even though NC will actually allow an 18 year old to be a commissioned city peace officer and even though the authors give her a family law enforcement connection, it is very rare for anyone under 21 to be hired and most departments make 21 the minimum age. So with her family connection, she becomes a police officer in a town of 3,000 at the age of 18 - even though she has no social skills and nothing to show she has a command presence. (Physical ability and the ability to shoot doesn't make someone a good candidate to be a police officer.) Then, after five years she transfers to a city with a population of over 100,000. This I could have accepted.

BUT she isn't hired as a police officer. She is hired for the SWAT team. (This ignores the fact that the SWAT team is a collateral duty not a primary one - meaning SWAT is not a full time job. It is an extra duty an existing officer applies and is selected for. Most agencies require that a new officer complete a one to three year probationary period before she is even eligible to apply for a collateral duty.) There is no way an outsider would be hired for a specialized team and no way a new SWAT member would simply go out on a job without training extensively with the rest of the team.

The first time she goes out with her new team, she misuses her firearm. Law enforcement officers don't ever shoot to wound. A firearm is a deadly weapon - not a tool to incapacitate. And the instructions the team received to bring the suspect back alive for questioning was redundant. Police are never given a "wanted dead or alive" directive.
Since there is absolutely no realistic way this character could be doing the job the authors want me to believe she is doing, my inner critical monologue won't shut up.

Frankly, my list of critiques would be longer than the free downloaded sample I received and this is a shame because I think these authors have genuine potential. But I would suggest that they find an editor with some law enforcement experience to proofread initial manuscripts. A more realistic setting makes for a more realistic character.

Didn't quite live up to it's potential
By Kindle Customer
After reading the sample chapters, I was so excited to read this book. However, about a third into the book, the genre shifted from UF to PNR as the plot took a backseat to the romance. It's unfortunate because the plot and Jenna's strong character is what drew me to the book. Jenna went from a strong, "I know what I want and no one will tell me different" character to almost split personality; subservient in her relationship with the romantic interest Adam but still kick-butt with everyone else. It's not that I didn't like Adam, but it would have been so much better if they had been able to build a realationship instead of everyone rushing them to make a permanent commitment before he went feral. It got so tedious to listen to her "I don't want to make a commitment yet it's so fast but I really like him and he may go feral and I have to save him, oh poor me what should I do" routine that I ended up skimming those parts. I really dislike those love at first sight, eternally committed in less than a week romances. They are so unrealistic that they become almost laughable and almost always the become a caricature of a real relationship. The plot that drew me in at the beginning was not really ever resolved or wrapped up in any way. I understand that the problem with the other pack will probably continue on for several books, but lots of authors do the same thing and still leave a feeling of resolution to each book. This was missing in this book. The "resolution" was wrapped up unsatisfactorily in a few sentences at the end to make room for the romance elements. If the author had made the romantic plot line in this book naturally progress over a couple of books instead of cramming it all in this book it would have made more room for the main plot to also progress more satisfactorily. I'm not sure if I would read the next book only because it appears the plot will be continued on with other characters becoming the main characters. While I enjoyed the character who I think the new H is going to be, I don't think I can stand to read another book where the H and h meet, boink, and mate in less than a week.
