Excerpt:I stare at the newspaper in front of me, my stomach churning. Any minute now, I expect to be sick.
Brody's wedding photos are on page one and page three. Possible Wedding of the Year, it reports. One of the biggest society events in Emhart County. Just the way Dawn wanted it.
Grudgingly, I have to admit, Alicia looks lovely in her Dior Gown, with hand-sewn crystals, according to the newspaper. Brody, as usual, looks dashing in a tux.
After reading about Brody's wedding and his dazzling life, I'm like a balloon that's deflating and I'm unable to function. Even though it's just 2 PM, I shut myself in my bedroom and close my eyes. I'm with Trojan now, I remind myself. Got to let it go. All the best, my beautiful Aubergine. It wasn't meant to be. It wouldn't have worked out. We were too different. Too many obstacles.
I will not cry, I tell myself even though tears prick the back of my eyes.
When Trojan arrives home, I'm fast asleep. He shakes me. "Burn? Why you in bed so early, baby? It's only 4 o'clock."
"Ah, just tired," I say and try to draw him close, mainly so that I don't have to look into his eyes when I lie. His brown eyes that miss nothing.
But he resists me, his eyes fixed on mine. "Sure it has nothing to do with the newspaper article?"
Oh crap! "Wh ... what newspaper article?" I fail at keeping my voice casual.
"White boy getting married."
Busted. Fuck!
"How do you know this, Trojan? And aren't you supposed to be going out with ...?"
"I saw the papers, Burn, and I thought of you. Thought maybe you needed me around."
I look into his eyes and I see concern and kindness, and it's just too much - I burst into tears.
I can't believe I did this, but I just can't help it - it hurts so much to see Brody happy and married.
I just can't help it.
As I fall apart, Trojan watches me quietly, a look of disappointment and helplessness on his face. After a few moments, he gets up and walks onto the balcony.
Relieved that he's left, I bury my face into my pillow and sob. When I'm spent, I think about Trojan. My behavior is so damaging to my relationship with him.
What if the roles were reversed - what if he was crying because his ex got married?
I would be so hurt.
After a while, I dry my eyes and put on my gown. I stop at the kitchen, grab two beers and make my way to the balcony, where Trojan sits on a chair and stares at the floor, his elbows on his knees.
I offer him the beer. He accepts it without looking at me, but he doesn't open it.
For a few moments we sit in silence.
He breaks it first. "I need to leave you, Burn," he says in a gruff voice. "I just don't know how to walk away."
My heart sinks. I don't want to lose Trojan. But, I deserve it.
"Isn't it ironic - I'm a black man, in the music industry, surrounded by women who will do anything for me, women who worship me, who will accept crumbs from me, yet I hanker after someone whose heart belongs to another man? How's that possible?" He turns to look at me. "Huh?"
"Trojan I ...I'm so sorry." I exhale loudly. "I'm so sorry."
We lapse into another awkward silence, the air around us pregnant with hurt.
This time I break it. "I'm sorry, Trojan. My behavior is unacceptable and you ...you're right. Do you want me to leave? I don't want to, but I will understand."
Please don't let him say yes. Let me say that he wants to work it out with me. Let him say that he understands my pain and what I'm going through.
His eyes drop to the ground as he appears to think about it.
Then, to my utter disappointment, Trojan nods slowly.
My head lolls.
I get up and stagger to the door, my heart heavy. At the door, I turn and look at him. Big fat tears splosh on the ground between his brown boots.
I rush back to him and take him in my arms. "I'm sorry, Trojan! I'm so sorry. I'm struggling with it - mourning the loss of him. I don't want him, I want to be with you. But I hurt so much and I try so hard to handle and hide the rejection, but I guess the hurt is just overwhelming at times. I'll be okay, I just need to allow myself my tears, then maybe I can put this behind me."
I expect him to be angry at me, to fight me, to call me names and accuse me of ruining his life. But he doesn't; he holds me and squeezes me to him. His pain is raw and tangible and I feel like the heel I am. After a while, he untangles himself from me, gets up and leaves the apartment without a word. His beer remains on the ground, unopened.
I linger where I am and stare into space. What the hell am I doing to him? He loves me. I love him. How can I let Brody drive my relationship to the ground like this?

Review about the whole series

First off let me say that this is a 4 part series, so please don't read this book without reading the three before this one......this series was awesome....I really enjoyed it......it follows a teenage girl and gives you her complete story.....love story that is......it had everything drama, action, humor, love, sex.....it hit so many levels I'm considering reading another one of her series....I gotta say I was torn just like Burn,.....Trojan and Brody had their positives and negatives.....but were in all good men.....I went threw ever emotion reading this,....great story Eve

There is something about her books, I just can't put them down. This one was great because she lived out her revenge dreams. I always have revenge dreams that I never follow through with them, but they are very satisfying. She follows through and they turn out good. It's like I'm getting satisfaction from her revenge scenes. There was a lot of mistakes in spelling and grammar, but I didn't let it bother me.

What the H?

I've read this authors book before, and had mix feeling about the book. I saw the same reoccurring theme in this book. Racicism! This bool begins in 2011 and spans another decade plus. Mind you that this is in California. In the public school where whites frequently drop the N word and other racial slurs without consequences. I though I had time travelled back to the 40's and 50's. (but how could that be, when the female character records every incident on her iPhone?) The female character is a pot head, stays stoned on her spare time and nothing changes as she grows up.
I love reading IR romances, but in this case I was rooting for the brother who pulled him self off the street and made something of himself. He loved and devoted so much for the self center Burn. In the end he got burned so many times by Burn. Yet he kept giving her several chances and taking her back. Trojan cared so much for Burn, that he even extended his love and care to her sister and later on to her young cousin, and took in Lanie's unwanted child. (Lanie is Burn's cousin). I did not like Brody at all. I felt that he was week and should have been there for Burn, but instead he pursued his family's dream. His whole family except for Nick disrespected and hurt Burn. Even Brody blackmailed Burn at one point. Through out book 1 and 2, Brody made an appearance here and there. The true love and Romance was about Trojan and Burn.
Oh just wait! In the end pot smoking Burn makes it to the highest office with Brody and guess what? Smoked pot! I give it a 2 star because there were very touching moments in the story that had me crying. It just wasn't realistic
