Hi, I’m Steven Thompson. I’ve worked hard the past several years to do my best to get back to my roots. That’s a great part of how I came to compile the recipes for The Quick & Easy Pioneers’ Cookbook. Our pioneer ancestors, by-in-large, were hardy folks with their share of trials and hardships. But, one thing I’m sure they valued in the good times and bad were the simple joys of family, and great food. What I discovered as my wife, Donna, cooked up some meals was how simple-but-scrumptious the dishes and desserts were that came out of those recipes. My favorite by far has been the Chicken & Dumplings. Recipes range from those delicious dumplings to Gravel Bed Chop Suey to Pioneer Horehound Candy to Yummy Cinnamon Pecans.
I tried to capture the spirit of the pioneers who perfected these recipes by maintaining some of their terminology and verbiage. I hope you enjoy the quaint style and language of our pioneer past. It would do my heart good if you have as much fun with this cookbook as I had putting it together.

My mom gave me some pictures and stories of our ancestors a while back. they included some interesting stories and facts about my Irish and Norwegian grandma, my Irish great grandpa and my Norwegian great grandma. My great grandpa Dyer was a western mountain man and fur trapper who moved his family all around the Goose Creek area of Southern Idaho and Northern Nevada.
Those stories got me intrigued and curious. What followed was a journey into my pioneer ancestors' lives and lifestyles. I expanded my curiosity by delving into my wife's family history, as well.
The more I learned, the more excited I got. Out of all that came an interesting collection of recipes and how they shaped the lives and spirit of American Pioneers...who are our grandpas, grandmas, great grand parents and great aunts and uncles.
Not only are the recipes I gathered a rich part of our American Heritage and Traditions, they are actually easy to prepare, delicious to eat...and actually very sustaining.
I decided to add a little spice to the recipe book by capturing the writing style and expressions of those hearty folks who conquered the wilderness, set up homes, lived their lives, and grew families.
I hope you have as much fun with this book as I did writing it.
About the Author
R. Steven Thompson is a proud grandpa, dad, and husband. He is a military veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force, as well as the Idaho Army and Air Force National Guards.
Thompson is CEO (Chief Everything Officer) of his business. Over the course of his professional life he worked for a major U.S. airline, was a deputy sheriff in wild-west Wyoming county, enjoyed a decade as a TV reporter and photographer, managed the broadcast department of a regional Farm News Publication in Idaho.
He and his wife (Donna) make their home on a small, rural acreage in Southern Idaho they call Meadow Star. He has three sons, two grand sons, and 5 grand daughters.
Thompson is a patriotic American and proud Idahoan who teaches respect for the American flag. He believes in America...her rich history, her ideals, and the U. S. Constitution. He believes in family, heritage, and tradition.

We Need more Cook Books like this one

What a delight this refreshing cook book is. R. Steven Thompson has truely written and put together a very unique and interesting configuration of simple pioneer recipes that catches the spirit of old fashioned, homespun cooking. I am so exited to try the home made yeast. A most wonderful addition to my cook book library. Looking forward to more books from this author.

Love the old time recipes!

A beautifully written book - I like how they kept the old style in the recipes. Now I know what "clabber" is. One of my favorites was the bread section. I also enjoyed the early part of the book before the recipes where the author talked a bit about the life of a pioneer. It was funny to imagine the chicken coop going along with them as they traveled.

This is a must have for any modern family that wants to have a real meal. The recipes are great ! I haven't made a bad dish yet. Simple, easy to understand no bull! I hope Mr.Thompson has more editions planned for the future.
